John R. "Butchie" Zanfagna, 77, passed away Friday, December 22, 2023. Born in Providence, he was the devoted son of Guido and Lillian (Poole) Zanfagna. Butchie was employed with the City of Warwick; he started with the Highway Department before moving to Parks & Recreation. He had worked in maintenance and as a supervisor, and retired from Thayer Arena and McDermott Pool. Butchie was involved for over 30 years as a coach and serving on the board of directors with the Warwick Police Athletic League, and American Legion Baseball. In 2009, he was inducted to the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his sister Lillian A. Romano, and is predeceased by his brother Ralph Zanfagna, brother-in-law Robert A. "Bob" Romano, and sister-in-law Almerinda Zanfagna. He was the loving uncle of Robert D. "Rob" Romano (Carolyn), Michael A. Romano, Ralph Zanfagna (Andrea), Gina Zanfagna, and Anthony Zanfagna. He also leaves 21 great-nieces and nephews and was "Uncle B" to Brent and Gia Romano; as well as leaving his cherished dog Zoey.
A visitation will be held Saturday, December 30, 2023 from 9:00-11:00am with a service at 11:00am in the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Warwick Police Athletic League, PO Box 9157, Warwick, RI 02889 would be appreciated.
