Johnathan was a proud U.S. Marine and MOS 0811 Field Artillery Cannoneer. He served bravely in the Marine Corps from 2004–2009, during which he earned several honors for his dedication and service, including:
* Sea Service Deployment Ribbon * Global War on Terrorism Service Medal * National Defense Service Medal * 3 Certificates of Appreciation * Letter of Appreciation * Rifle Sharpshooter Badge
Although Johnathan accomplished so much in his military career, his service also came with deep personal battles. He struggled with PTSD stemming from his time in the military-an invisible weight he carried long after returning home. Despite these challenges, Johnathan was known for his compassion and being very kind hearted, his goofy sense of humor, and his endlessly curious spirit.
Born and raised in
Hammond, Indiana, he was a cub scout, attended Rockford Christian Camp, played soccer, and loved his 2 pet turtles, fish, 2 birds, and 3 dogs. He later grew up in
Joliet, Illinois, where he attended Hufford Jr. High School, Joliet West High School, and was a member of the JROTC program before enlisting in the Military.
Known as John Thomas, JT, and John growing up, he later became known to be called "Fergie" by all his friends at the VA.
Johnathan's cat Wasabi was his pride and joy, and his passions were cooking and fishing. He very much enjoyed his movies & popcorn, and many different sauces & spices. John liked his music, improvising lyrics, and making and giving away arts and crafts ( mainly diamond paintings, paracord bracelets, origami, and drawings). He had a collection of neck ties, and crazy socks that made him smile, but above all, he loved spending time with family, talking, playing games, and dice.
John brought light, laughter, and warmth into the lives of everyone who knew him and he will be dearly missed.
Cremation Rites have been accorded. Johnathan's ashes will be buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at a later date For more information, please call 815-725-0100 or visit www.farkasfuneralhome.com.
