Johnny Lee Goodman , 78 of Crab Orchard, passed away on February 17th at his home after a lengthy illness surrounded by family, friends and his beloved dog Izzy.
He was born March 25,1946 in Welch, West Virginia to Mike and Mary (Elsie) Goodman who preceded him in death. Also preceding are 4 brothers and a sister.
Johnny was a graduate of Glen Roger’s High School where he played football and was on the wrestling team. After graduating Johnny went on to be a coal miner for 30 years, last employed by Peabody Coal Company. His life after retirement was full of attending NASCAR races, hunting, fishing, gardening, working in his yard, sitting on his patio and lively poker games with his friends. He loved his West Virginia athletics and watching his team live and on TV.
Johnny is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Rita Beckett Goodman of Crab Orchard. Also surviving are sisters Mary Bishop of Crab Orchard and Patsy Smith of Princeton. Mary was often a sitter for Johnny when Rita had to go out. He enjoyed their time together.
Other survivors include his foster sisters Belinda Prichard from Glen Fork, and Doreen Terry from Beckley, very special niece and nephew Falyn and Liam Delgrande. Brothers in law Hartsel and Tom Beckett and families were best friends as well as brothers. Niece Danielle Delgrande was a daughter to him.
A memorial service will be held at Crab Orchard Baptist Church on Saturday February 22nd. Visitation will begin at 10:30am. funeral services at 11:30. Committal services will follow at the church. Pastors Todd Thomas, Dewey Lowe, and Tom Lilly will officiate. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Dean Beckett, Paul Thomas, Phillip Delgrande, Phillip Bond, Brett Beckett, and Louie Armendaris. Honorary pall bearer is Liam Delgrande.
In lieu of flowers, the family request s donations to Hospice of Southern West Virginia who enabled Johnny to remain at home for his last days as he wished. Special thank you to Tonya and Heather for their loving contributions to his care. Special thanks to Amanda Davis who always went above and beyond to provide excellent care and loving support though out his long illness. Additionally, many thanks to Dena Beckett, Janet Lilly, Dean and Sarita Beckett and Barbara Gerlach for all their assistance during Johnny’s last days.
