Johnny Scott Mathis, age 43, fought the good fight, finished the race, and met his Savior face-to-face January 8, 2026. Scott was born August 24, 1982, in Conyers. Scott was a God-fearing man, who loved his family, his country, and his friends. Scott leaves behind a legacy of love, life and a whole of laughter.
While he was best known for his practical jokester personality and sense of humor, he was a Georgia Bulldog fan, collected coins and enjoyed cooking. Scott took pleasure in being outdoors, where he could be found smoking meat or clearing his head; and of course, he did not mind fishing or hunting when the opportunity arose.
Most of all, his biggest joys in life were his children. Whether it was admiring Cheslie's love for animals and her kind spirit; or watching Alyssa do gymnastics or cheering on the football field; or watching John Scott on the baseball field and their various accomplishments at school … he was the epitome of a proud daddy.
He faithfully served at Faith Tabernacle, with his beloved-bearded brother, Ryan Mathis, on the media team. Scott could often be seen dancing in the sound booth at church; it was just one of the many things he would do to make people laugh. And sometimes that laughter came at the expense of his sister, Amber Rosser, when they were kids; but he loved his siblings dearly, nonetheless.
Scott never met a stranger, and because strangers quickly become friends, nicknames were often dished out by Scott, and those names are stuck for life. The Bible says a friend loves at all times, and Scott proved that in the way he loved people.
The Mathis men all have a strong work ethic, and Scott was no different during his tenure at Greif as a lead machinist.
Scott was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, son-in-law and friend.
He is survived by his sweet wife and best friend, of 16 years, Kristina Mathis. Their love and commitment towards one another helped them through life's ups and downs; ultimately setting a Godly example of marriage and lifestyle to their children.
He was the proud father of two daughters, Cheslie Adams, Alyssa Mathis and son, John Scott Mathis.
Scott is also survived by his proud parents Johnny and Frankie Mathis of Monticello; sister, Amber (Steve) Rosser of Covington; brother, Ryan (Kelsey) Mathis of Covington; nephews, Garrett (Abby) Rosser, Luke Rosser of Covington, Jasper Mathis of Covington, Carson Mathis of Covington, Jeremiah Lewallen of Ellenwood, and Luca Cox of Norcross; nieces, Lila Mathis of Covington, Sarah Rose Brown of Ellenwood, and Charlie Cox of Norcross; beloved in-laws, Kenny and Lisa Beck of Conyers; sister in-law Kristin Beck of Ellenwood; brothers-in-law, Ross Beck of Conyers and Daven Cox of Norcross; along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who loved Scott dearly. Additionally, Scott leaves behind a loving and supportive church family.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Faith Tabernacle UPC at 2 p.m., with Pastor Michael Patterson officiating. The church is located at 631 Ralph Road in Conyers. Attendees are welcome to wear camo or Georgia Bulldog attire to honor Scott
