Johnny Wendelin Shepard was born on September 17, 1960, in Kirkwood, MO, to his loving parents, John (deceased) and Carol Shepard. He passed away on September 16, 2023, just one day before his 63rd birthday.
Johnny's journey began at Missouri State University, where he pursued his passion for Agriculture Business and Management, graduating in 1983. During his time there, he was an active member and even served as the President of the Pi Kappa Alpha-Zeta Chi Fraternity. Some of the best memories of his life were created through the bonds of brotherhood during his fraternity days, earning him the nickname "Tarzan."
A true community leader, Johnny was an integral part of downtown Joplin, MO. He owned and operated Shepard's Oak Tree Fabrics, leaving an indelible mark on the local business scene. Additionally, he took great pride in being the owner of The Hangar, a restaurant where he earned the prestigious title of "King of the Wings" in 2005. His dedication to his various roles was apparent to all who knew him.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Johnny had a zest for life. He found immense joy in entertaining friends and family with his culinary talents, grilling up delicious meals, hosting gatherings by the pool, and cheering on his beloved Kansas City Chiefs during memorable game-day parties at his home. He had a green thumb, lovingly tending to his yard, landscaping, and planting vibrant vegetables and plants. Music was a constant companion, with Johnny enjoying a diverse range of genres, from rock-and-roll to Irish tunes. He was an avid concert-goer, always eager to experience live music.
Nature held a special place in Johnny's heart, and he cherished trips to destinations like the Buffalo River. The beach in Florida was another beloved getaway spot, where he reveled in the company of his family. Johnny had a knack for thrift store finds and antiquing and delighted in coming up with clever Halloween costumes, complete with tall platform boots and props. His infectious sense of humor, jokes, pranks, and funny nicknames brought laughter and light to every gathering.
However, what truly defined Johnny was his enormous heart. He had an unwavering desire to ensure that everyone around him felt loved, appreciated, and special. His thoughtfulness knew no bounds, and he took immense pride in his family and his strong work ethic. Johnny's sensitivity and hardworking spirit endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In honor of Johnny Wendelin Shepard, a Celebration of Life will be held at The Ramsay Building, 107 E. 6th St, Joplin, MO 64801, on Monday, October 2nd, from 5 pm to 7 pm. In lieu of a traditional funeral, this event will serve as a gathering to remember and cherish the remarkable life of a man who brought so much joy to those around him.
Johnny's memory will live on in the hearts of his beloved wife, Diane Shepard; daughter, Madalyn, and her husband, Danny Scanio; son, Nickolas Shepard; and grandsons, Brooks and Graham Scanio, who lovingly called him "Pappy." He is also survived by his mother, Carol Shepard, and his sister, Michele Pedrotti. As well as the countless friends and community members whose lives he touched. Johnny Wendelin Shepard's legacy of love, laughter, and camaraderie will forever be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
