Johnny Tune passed away on Friday, April 25th, 2025, with his devoted daughter, Karen, by his side. Johnny was a Nashville native, born on 10/11/1942.
He is survived by his loving wife Barbara of 42 years and his cherished daughters Karen McGrath (Jim) and Michele Tune; Baxter, his beloved shih-tzu that was fiercely protective of him in his final days. Step grandchildren: Justin Temple, Chellsi Temple, Cydney Temple, Zachary Temple and 2 step great-grandchildren, Theo and Luca.
He is preceded in death by his parents John Tune Jr and Dorothy Tune; Uncle, James Tune; his beloved dog, Max, and many great friends and close business colleagues.
Johnny graduated North High School and went on to graduate from MTSU, in 1964, with a B.S., double major in economics and history. Post grad he proceeded to build a prosperous 50+ year career in the Insurance Industry. Johnny was an astute and respected insurance executive with a larger-than-life personality and sense of humor. Some of his career highlights began with him working as a field underwriter for the Phoenix of Hartford (Travelers). One of his famous insurance stories was while working for the Phoenix of Hartford and living in Hartford, CT, attending insurance school. When the rigorous class was completed and final grades were calculated, he was number 1 in his class, beating out the very confident ivy league students for the number one spot. He got a kick out of being the guy from a small-town southern university exceling over the ivy league schools. He changed his career focus to the insurance agency side in the early 70's. He worked for Simmons and Massoud Insurance Agency in Jackson, TN; opened and sold 2 insurance agencies in Nashville during his career, Tune & Shelton Ins Agency; Tune Insurance Center, Inc. which opened in 1987 and sold in 2000. Johnny continued to excel and work until his retirement.
Johnny's life was a tapestry of joyful moments and passions. He married his high school sweetheart, Janice Temple Tune. They were married for 16 years and had 2 daughters. He was an avid golfer and reader. He spent many afternoons and weekends on the golf course perfecting his swing and driving his favorite cars. Johnny was a passionate supporter of Vanderbilt sports and a season ticket holder of the Tennessee Titans for 20 years. Johnny was very generous and loved going to the North High Association reunions to connect with his high school friends. They created a North High scholarship fund to help less fortunate students continue their education.
Though he passed, Johnny's legacy of love, laughter and generosity will forever be a guiding light in our lives. Let us celebrate his remarkable journey and hold dearly the happy memories he leaves behind.
