Johnquavious "John" Paul Glisson, age 22, died unexpectedly February 14, 2023, at his home on DeRuyter Lake.
Born on December 21, 2000, in Miami, FL, he was the son of Timothy and Melissa (Hall) Glisson. In addition to being a great son, brother, friend and worker, "Johnny Rocket", as he was affectionately known, was a really good guy. Although not a big man physically, John had a huge heart. Whether handing out assists for the DeRuyter Rockets Basketball team in high school or assisting a customer in the aisles of the DeRuyter Big M where he worked after graduation, John was always more concerned about the person he was with than himself.
John also had a tremendous work ethic and DeRuyter Lake residents will experience a huge void as he was constantly helping one neighbor or another throughout the year. Whether it was as a construction sidekick to his biggest fan, Kenny Coon, or detailing boats, painting camps, or hauling out docks for his great friend, Jerry Rice, of the DeRuyter Lake General Store, "Johnny" was the Lake's "Johnny on the Spot".
A great athlete in his own right, having played Varsity Basketball and Soccer for DeRuyter High School before his graduation in 2020, John was also a loyal Philadelphia Eagles fan and never missed a chance to brag about them; especially this season!
Yet the love of John's life was his family and there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for any of them. While John's "specialties" may have been a trip to the grocery store for his parents, or an "Uber" ride to McDonalds for his siblings, it was the gift of encouragement that was his greatest gift to his family. Each could always count on John to recognize exactly what they needed and be there for them.
John is survived and will be greatly missed by his parents, Melissa and Tim; fifteen brothers and sisters, JJ, Arnesia, Sterling, Debra, Shawn, Allen, Louie, Aaron, Anastasia, Frankie, Riley, Terricka, Shakiah, Andrew, and Tyrone; and his maternal grandmother, Ann Eisenhut, of Waterville.
There will be a Memorial Service sometime in the future for family and friends. For those who would like to, donations would be welcome in John's memory to the DeRuyter Lake Foundation (DBA: Tioughnioga Lake Preservation Foundation). P.O. Box 476, DeRuyter, NY 13052.
