Dr. Jonelle Carey Rowe passed away peacefully on October 1st in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. She was born on September 11, 1940, in Kingston, Pennsylvania. Jonelle's life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to family, education, and medicine.
Jonelle's early years in Kingston were shaped by her love of ballet, a discipline she pursued under the direction of Barbara Weisberger until her academic ambitions led her to Vassar College. There she earned her bachelor's degree, which laid the foundation for her medical path. She began her graduate studies at Yale University but ultimately earned her M.D. from the University of Vermont College of Medicine-a milestone that launched her distinguished career.
For 25 years, Dr. Rowe served as Chief of the Division of Neonatology at the University of Connecticut, where her expertise and compassionate care touched countless lives. Subsequently, she served as a Health Policy Fellow at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation alongside luminaries such as Former Senator Bill Frist. Ultimately, she brought her career to a close with 5 years serving the Department of Women's Health in Washington, D.C.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jonelle was a woman of many interests. She cherished the moments spent with her beloved grandchildren, Elias, Fiona, Rowe, and Ronny, whose lives she enriched with her wisdom and warmth. An avid traveler, Jonelle's curiosity and zest for life took her on many adventures across the globe. Her keen interest in politics kept her engaged with the world around her, whether she was reading the newspaper or listening to NPR's All Things Considered.
Dr. Rowe is survived by her loving children, Bradley (Rachael Stryker), Whitney (Sean Quigley), and Hawley (Steven Weber); her cherished grandchildren; her devoted brother, John Carey (Janet); her sister-in-law, Nancy Carey; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives who will miss her deeply. She also leaves behind her former husband, Dr. David W. Rowe, with whom she shared a significant and formative chapter of her life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John Leo Carey and Veronica Davitt Carey, and her brother Edward Carey.
Dr. Jonelle Carey Rowe's life was a portrait of love, dedication, and service. Her memory will live on in those who loved her and her contributions to medicine, and her family will remain as an enduring inspiration to all who knew her. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate the indelible mark she has left on the world.
A memorial visitation will be held from 10am to 11am on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Bradley Funeral Home, 601 Rt 73 S. and Evesham Rd, Marlton, NJ 08053. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11am, also at the funeral home.
