Jose Coplin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wright Funeral Home and Crematory - Franklin on Oct. 6, 2025.
Franklin – Jose Dishmey Coplín was born January 10th, 1941 and in the presence of family, peacefully went to his heavenly home September 29th, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, ingenuity, and devotion to faith and family. Jose's story was one of resilience, determination, and love. He rose from poverty to positions of leadership, guided by faith in God and a heart for service.

Jose's life began in the humble fishing town of Samaná in the Dominican Republic as one of eight children to Wesly Simon Dishmey Coplín and Isabel Coplín, a carpenter and a housewife. Opportunities for education were limited, yet at a young age Jose dreamed of becoming an engineer. After his parents removed him from primary school for financial reasons, Jose found work on farms and apprenticed in mechanical shops, honing the skills that would later define his career.

In 1963, Jose immigrated to the United States at the age of 22. He arrived in New York City with little money but with strong support from his local church family. His first job was at a Manhattan gas station, earning $65 a week, and within a year, he was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps where he served in Europe and Asia during the Vietnam War era. His mechanical aptitude quickly distinguished him, earning him three meritorious promotions. In less than four years, he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, a remarkable achievement.

After his military service, he earned a degree in Engineering Science from Bronx Community College, balancing his studies with work and family responsibilities. He went on to work for the Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York City, where he rose from diesel technician to Assistant Director of Quality Assurance in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Jose oversaw the condition of over 6,000 buses, supervised nearly forty managers, and played a critical role in ensuring the reliability of transit for millions of New Yorkers. His ingenuity led to recognized improvements, including redesigning outdated equipment and implementing technical systems that improved efficiency and safety. For Jose, engineering was more than a career-it was a calling, a way to serve others through precision and innovation.

Jose's deepest devotion, however, was to his faith. A lifelong member of the Church of God of Prophecy, he served faithfully as a Deacon and gave his time, talents, and resources generously to the work of the church. In addition to his gifts in music-playing guitar during worship services-Jose also drew upon his studies in Architecture. This knowledge, combined with his mechanical and carpentry skills, enabled him to design, build, and rebuild several churches ensuring the congregations had strong and beautiful spaces to worship.

Jose's advice to his grandchildren was simple but profound: follow your passion, honor your family, and persevere through hardship. He reminded them never to waste the gifts they had been given, encouraging them to live lives of purpose and integrity.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings and son Jose Dishmey, Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Carlota Guerra Dishmey, his children from his first marriage and their spouses Aldwin Dishmey, Donna Dishmey Rodriguez, Cindy Dishmey Montgomery, grandchildren, great grandchildren, stepchildren, and church family.
A Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held at 2PM Saturday, October 11, 2025 in Wright Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
