Jose Gamez Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palm Heights Mortuary on Nov. 9, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Jose (Joe) M. Gamez, age 90, went home to be with the Lord on November 5, 2025. Joe was born in Kyle, Texas on August 3, 1935 to loving parents Manuel and Jesusa Gamez. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Maria Del Carmen (Mary) Gamez, parents, and was the last of 13 siblings. Joe is survived by his loving children; Rosie Alejandro (Adam), Libby Macias (Luis), Veronica Arce (Mario) and Joe A. Gamez (Ariel); 7 beloved grandchildren, Adam and Briana Alejandro, Joshua and Angelica Macias, Monique, Michelle, and Franco Arce, as well as 6 beautiful great grandchildren. His love and legacy will live on in all of them.
Growing up on a cotton farm near Uhland, TX, Joe worked long hard days with his siblings picking cotton to help his family earn a living. These experiences in post-depression era America helped form what many would come to know about Joe's character. He was by all definitions a "Hard working Family Man". This was evident by the fact that he worked a myriad of jobs over the years to always make sure his family was taken care of and would not go without. Joe did everything from delivering pastries, working construction, was a traveling insurance agent, and as many will recall, a route truck driver delivering propane. He always did whatever he had to in order to provide for his loved ones.
Those who were blessed to have Joe as part of their lives will also know there was much more to this amazing man than just hard work. Joe had many passions. His most important passion was following his Catholic faith by attending mass on Sundays at San Fernando Cathedral where he and Mary were married. He was a life-long diehard fan of the New York Yankees. Joe grew up playing baseball in leagues throughout the state and if you were to ask him, he would say there was never a better shortstop than when he was on the field. He also loved music and dancing. If you were on a car ride with him, you would have most likely experienced him belt out an old Elvis or Frank Sinatra song. He and Mary also loved to dance. Folks would watch in heart-felt appreciation as the couple would glide across the dance floor, swaying as one, knowing exactly the next movement of the other. It was truly a beautiful sight.
Joe's vigor and passion for life, his many interests and talents, and unrelenting love for his family and friends will always be remembered and revered. His legacy of hard work, integrity, and servitude will be a source of strength and guidance for his family for generations to come.
The family welcomes visitors on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 4 - 8pm with a rosary to begin at 6:30pm at Palm Heights Mortuary. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 14, 2025 at 10am at St. Mary's Catholic Church (19711 N. Dixon St. Somerset, TX 78069) with a procession from the funeral home at 9:30am. Interment will follow at San Fernando Cemetery III.
