Jose Montoya Obituary

Visit the McDougal Funeral Home website to view the full obituary.

Jose "Joe" Nemesio Montoya, age 85, passed away on October 8, 2025, in his home in West Valley City, Utah. Born on February 9, 1940, in Mora County, New Mexico, Joe lived a full and varied life marked by hard work, deep knowledge, and a love for the simple pleasures of life.

Joe was the son of Arturo Montoya and Herlinda Ortega. He was born in New Mexico and eventually built a life rooted in dedication to his family and his many trades. Over the years, Joe held numerous jobs that reflected his strong work ethic and versatility. He worked at Kennecott Copper Mine, in furniture manufacturing, and as a security guard. However, his favorite role was that of a carpenter-a craft he took great pride in and one that allowed him to express his creativity and skill with his hands.

On August 15, 1968, Joe married Victoria Anna Montoya. Their union was one of enduring commitment until her passing. Together they raised a large family and created a home filled with love and resilience, maintaining a home in Utah. The ever-growing family that Joe presided over is a testament to their commitment and love.

Joe had a passion for reading, especially Westerns- a genre he favored whether in books, movies, or music. He found joy in immersing himself in tales of the Old West and often spent time tinkering in his shed, where he could be found working on projects or simply enjoying the quiet satisfaction of fixing things. His vast knowledge and stubborn spirit were well known to those around him-qualities that made him both respected and unforgettable.

He is remembered with love by his sister Pauline (Fred) Hardy; daughters Elvira (Pat) Rondas, Helen Estrada, Isabel (Dave) McDonald, and Cindy Bartell; sons Billy (Angie) Estrada and Robert (Kristy) Montoya; daughters-in-law Daniele (Curtis) Collard and Diana Estrada; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought joy to his years.

Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife Victoria Anna Montoya; parents Arturo Montoya and Herlinda Ortega; sister Ester Merris; brother Arturo Montoya; sons Marciano Estrada, Jose "Little Joe" Estrada, Charlie Estrada, and Andres Montoya; and son-in-law Bret Bartell. Joe looks forward to a joyous reunion with his wife and family in heaven.

May the memory of Jose "Joe" Montoya bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a lasting tribute to a life lived with strength and heart.

A Funeral Service will be held on October 15, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road, Taylorsville, Utah. Interment will be at Valley View Memorial Park, 4400 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah.
