Josef Derflinger

Josef Derflinger, 71, of Browns Mills, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Born in Sierning, Austria, Josef later made his home in the United States, where he built a life centered on family, integrity, and quiet wisdom. He lived in Metuchen for nearly 20 years with his family of four children.
Josef is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Monique, and their four children, Kayo Masuda and her husband Hiro, Chris Alan Derflinger and his wife Yelin, Aurelia Derflinger and her partner Boy Veenstra, and Johann Derflinger. He was a beloved Opa to his five grandchildren – Adele, Mia, Elina, Hazel, and Logan – who brought him endless joy and pride.
Josef worked for many years as the IT Manager for True World Foods from 1985 until his retirement in 2017. He was known not only for his technical skill, but also for his calm demeanor, thoughtful approach to his work, and his characteristic sense of humor. Josef had a mind that never stopped seeking – he was deeply interested in philosophy and religion, always pursuing a deeper understanding of truth, and striving to live a life of goodness.
Josef's quiet strength, gentle heart, and steady presence left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He will be remembered as a man of depth, humility, and principle – a devoted husband, loving father, and wise grandfather.
The visitation will take place on Monday, July 14, 2025, from 9-11am followed by a Funeral Service from 11am-12pm at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave., Metuchen. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Iselin.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Josef's memory may do so by taking a moment to reflect, read something meaningful, or spend time with loved ones – just as he would have done.
