Joseph Akpanikat Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Glenville Funeral Home - Glenville on Mar. 31, 2026.
Joseph Paul Akpanikat, 77, a loving husband, father, and philanthropist, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, in Schenectady, New York. Born on October 22, 1948, in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, to his late parents, Paul and Bessie Akpanikat. Joseph's life was defined by his steadfast commitment to his family, his strong faith, and his constant efforts to help others.

Joseph grew up in the warm embrace of a large family in Nigeria. He grew up deeply immersed in the lively customs and heritage of his native country. In his 20s, he shared his love of education by teaching in Nigeria. His passion for learning led Joseph to Texas University, where he earned a degree in Naturopathic Medicine. As a Naturopathic Doctor, Joseph dedicated his life to healing others, working with unwavering commitment in Oregon and Arizona. But his greatest joy and achievement came in the form of fatherhood, as he welcomed his cherished children, Akwaowo, Uwem, Eniefiok, Ikono, Obong, and Idara into the world.

Joseph met the love of his life, Blessing Okon Oliver, in Nigeria. The couple married in March 1993 and settled in Niskayuna, New York, where Joseph built a distinguished career as a Respiratory Therapist at Ellis Hospital and Albany Medical Center. His dedication to his profession was evident in the compassionate care he provided to his patients until his retirement in 2023. Joseph and Blessing were proud parents who fostered a home filled with joy, love, and unwavering support for their faith, community, and their cherished homeland.

A man of deep Christian faith, Joseph was a devoted parishioner of Kateri Tekakwitha Church. He demonstrated his spirituality by showing love and kindness to the people in his life through his actions. Joseph was a man of few words, but when he spoke, he resonated with wisdom and kindness. He was an avid reader and traveler, finding joy in exploring innovative ideas and places. Tennis provided him with a spirited outlet for his energy, but nothing compared to the happiness he found in the company of his family.

Joseph's commitment to community service was unparalleled. His philanthropic legacy in Nigeria is a testament to his generosity and desire to help others. Through sponsoring Nigerian students' university education and leading organizations such as A.N.C.D and Mkpat Abasi Group in America, Joseph had a profound impact. He and his wife worked tirelessly for the J. J. C Educational Foundation, which has sponsored many students from high school through college. He has constructed boreholes, upgraded schools and hospitals, and delivered vital supplies and medical equipment to villages in Nigeria.

Predeceased by his parents, Joseph's legacy lives on through his loving wife, Blessing; his children, Akwaowo, Uwem, Eniefiok, Ikono, Obong, and Idara; and his siblings.

Joseph Paul Akpanikat is gone, but his legacy still inspires those who continue his work.

Visitation will take place at Glenville Funeral Home, located at 9 Glenridge Rd., on Friday, April 10, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral Mass in accordance with Christian tradition will take place at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church on Rosa Road in Schenectady on Saturday, April 11th, at 10 am, with viewing from 9-10 am. He is going to be laid to rest in his hometown in Nigeria.

We welcome and appreciate any financial support. Please send them to the Akpanikat's Family.
