In Loving Memory of Joseph J. Baker
Devoted Educator, Lifelong Philly Sports Fan and Grandfather Extraordinaire
Joseph J. Baker, age 77 years of
Turnersville, NJ, passed away October 4, 2025. Surviving are his devoted wife for 55 years, Constance E. (nee Stuski), cherished daughter, Allison and her husband, Edward Lawyer, and the grandchildren he adored, Eleanor, Ryan and Madeleine. Joe was one of seven siblings: Elizabeth "Bunny" (late Frank) Santonastasi, the late Marygene Brousard (Jim), Paul (Ruthie) Baker, the late John "Pete" (Lisa) Baker, Susan Morrone and Michael (Beth) Baker. He was also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Joe was the son of Paul and Elizabeth (nee McGlone) and was born and raised in Philadelphia. He earned his bachelor's degree in Chemistry from St. Joseph University and eventually a masters degree in Education from Villanova University. He served his country in the U.S. Army reserves. He met his wife Connie through a mutual friend after Connie noticed that Joe always seemed to be standing at the door of his house when she was visiting his neighbor. Joe was a calming, steady presence to Connie's energy and exuberance. They married in 1970 and eventually moved to New Jersey in 1977 where they lovingly raised their daughter, Allison.
Joe was a Chemistry and Physics teacher for 35 years at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia. While there, he was a calm and patient presence in his students' lives as well. He also was a good friend to many of his fellow teachers.
Above all, he was a family man. In retirement, he enjoyed being a hands-on grandfather to his 3 grandchildren who were not only his pride and joy but also his daily companions. For over 16 years, he played the role of caretaker, chauffeur, tutor, cheerleader, and hero to them all. He was a constant presence on the sidelines and at all school activities. His influence is imprinted in their lives forever.
Joe had a soft spot for all animals, especially his granddogs Winston and Jack, who knew exactly where to go for treats and affection.
Whether he was helping a student with a tough science problem, explaining why the sky was blue, or yelling at the TV during a bad call, he brought love, humor, and stability to those around him. He was the kind of man who showed up – with quiet strength and unshakable loyalty.
He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished by those who were lucky to have known him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you root for the Eagles this Sunday and maybe sneak a treat to a dog in his honor.
A Private Memorial Service is being planned.
