Joseph Baumgartner, Jr. Obituary
Joseph "Joe" Frank Baumgartner
February 8, 1931 ~ November 21, 2024 (age 93)
In Loving Memory of Joseph Frank Baumgartner
Joseph "Joe" Baumgartner, a dedicated father, grandfather, great grandfather, and valued member of his community, passed away in his home surrounded by family on November 21, 2024, at the age of 93. Born in 1931, Joe's life was a balance of creativity, bravery, discipline, gratitude, and an unwavering faith.
Joe was a self-taught engineer, whose career was distinguished by a relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence. His engineering feats were not merely technical accomplishments, but gems of creative thought and meticulous design. Joe took exceptional pride that he built the family home, a design that showcased his talents and dedication. Each corner of his home reflected his spirit and precise craftsmanship.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Joe was a dedicated woodworker. His workshop was a haven of tools and sawdust, where he created countless gorgeous pieces that blended functionality with artistry. Whether it was a simple birdhouse or an intricate piece of furniture, Joe's woodworking plans were instilled with his unique vision and skill set.
Joe had a particular affinity for repairing clocks, a specialty that combined his engineering expertise with his appreciation for history and detail. His home was filled with the soothing sounds of clocks ticking, each one a testament to his patience and technical mastery.
Throughout his life, Joe demonstrated remarkable bravery facing significant health challenges. He faced these demands head-on with a resolute courage, never retreating from his physical obstacles. His meticulous nature was evident in everything he did, from his professional achievements to his favorite projects.
Joe was also a man of deep gratitude and faith. His religious beliefs were a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and providing strength during adversity. He was an active member of his church, where he shared his leadership and compassion within the community.
Joe's love of learning was a defining aspect of his personality. He was always eager to expand his knowledge on a variety of topics, whether through reading or engaging in thoughtful discussions with his grandchildren. His inquisitive mind and thirst for knowledge were inspirational to all who knew him.
Joe married Shirley Hobert on October 8, 1955. They felt as if they belonged together the moment they met and dated for three years. Shirley died in July of 2023 and Joe has greatly missed her in the last 16 months.
Joe is survived by his son Tom (spouse, Cindy) Baumgartner of Westerville, Ohio; his grandchildren Emily Baumgartner of Berlin, Germany; Kathryn (spouse, Eric) Socrates of Montgomery, Ohio; Andrew (spouse, Emmi Skeans) Baumgartner of Portland, Oregon; and Gregory Baumgartner of Taitung, Taiwan; his great grandchildren Theo Socrates, Elena Socrates, and Miles Socrates all of Montgomery, Ohio; his sister-in-law Bev (spouse, Larry) Shertzer of Massillon, Ohio; his nieces Sharon (spouse, Dave) Turkall of Massillon, Ohio; Shelley Shertzer Grabill of Massillon, Ohio; Sherry (spouse, Scott) Johnson of Massillon, Ohio; his nephew Shawn (spouse, Susie) Shertzer of Massillon, Ohio; and his niece Shanna Shertzer of Massillon, Ohio. Joe was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, his parents Joseph & Mary and son Timothy, all of Massillon, Ohio.
Joe's life was one of love of family, leadership and serving others. His legacy of creativity, discipline, faith, compassion, and bravery will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends in the generations to follow.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 30 at Holy Family Parish in Navarre, at 11 AM with Rev. Kevin Peters, celebrant. The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM at the church prior to the service. Burial to follow at St. Clement Cemetery in Navarre.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Holy Family Catholic Parish, Navarre, Ohio.
May Joe's soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory forever live on in the hearts of all whose lives he touched.
