Joseph Bennett Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Davis-Becker Funeral Home - Boardman from Jan. 13 to Jan. 15, 2026.
J. Richard "Dick" Bennett, 92, of Youngstown, Ohio, passed away on January 8, 2026, in the presence of his family. Born on June 5, 1933, in Youngstown, he was the son of Joseph A. and Margaret (Turner) Bennett. He graduated from South High School in 1951 and went on to earn his degree in Physical Education from Kent State University in 1957.
Following high school, Dick worked for two years in various industrial jobs. With many of his friends away at college, he spent his free time at the YMCA, where several staff encouraged him to pursue a YMCA career. That advice proved pivotal. Dick devoted his entire professional life to the Youngstown YMCA in several capacities, serving from 1957 to 1991 and retiring as CEO after 15 years.
During his YMCA tenure, Dick held leadership roles in state and national YMCA organizations, received the Maverick Award for Outstanding Area Physical Director in 1964, and served as Leaders Club Commissioner and Director of Leaders Training School. He also helped bring the Community Cup to the Mahoning Valley. Beyond the YMCA, he served as Secretary of the Mahoning Valley Management Association and on numerous boards, including Kent State Alumni Association, Big Brothers of America, Goodwill Industries, and volunteered with the United Way and Kiwanis Club.
His faith was central to his life. A member of Canfield Presbyterian Church, Dick served as an elder, Sunday School teacher, and men's group leader. Through his YMCA work-especially with Leaders Club-he encouraged young people to develop character, leadership, and responsibility. Many former members became successful professionals and community leaders. Dick often reflected that his greatest reward was the strengthening of his own faith and the opportunity to encourage others in theirs.
Dick married Gwen Taylor in Akron, Ohio, in 1958, and together they shared 66 years together rooted in faith, family, and service. He cherished time spent with his family and made many special memories with his grandchildren, especially during summer vacations on Oak Island, NC. His hobbies included gardening, golf, local HS and YSU sports supporter, and volunteering at Camp Fitch YMCA, a place close to his heart.
Dick is survived by his children, Terrie L. Bennett of Poland, Ohio; Richard "Dick" (Julie) Bennett of Painesville, Ohio; and Jill S. Bennett of Poland, Ohio; as well as six grandchildren-Abbey (Josh) Ramirez, Joshua (Jess) Bennett, Daniel Bennett, Rebekah Bennett, Luke (Jenna) Bennett, and Hermela Bennett-and five great-grandchildren: Charlie, Ruthie, Judah, Eliza, and Lucy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwen, and his parents.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 19, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market Street in Boardman. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Larry Bowald officiating. Interment will take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Boardman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the YMCA of Youngstown, 17 N. Champion St., Youngstown, OH 44503 or Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main ST, Canfield, OH 44406 in Dick's honor.
