Joseph (Joe) Edward Breinig passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside on June 27, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Joe was born in Romney WV on June 6, 1946, and was the son of the late James Carter Breinig and Anna Belle Ansel Breinig. He was also preceded in death by his brother James Breinig. Joe is survived by his wife of 55 years Sandra Smith Breinig and his children, son Joseph Edward Breinig II, wife Theresa of Leesburg VA and their children, Christopher Taylor, Grace Taylor and Thomas Breinig and daughter Christine (Breinig) Moye, husband Joe, of Aldie, VA and their children, John Ryan Moye, Claire Lynn Moye and James David Moye. Twin brother John Breinig, wife Geraldine (Sue) of Berkley Springs, WV, and sister Nancy (Breinig) Wade and husband Al of Raleigh NC.
Joe graduated from West Virginia University in 1968 and earned his master's degree in administration in 1972. He began his career in education as a teacher of physical education at Loudoun County High School where he was the Assistant Varsity Football coach and JV Basketball coach, he then transferred to Broad Run High School as the JV Football coach and JV Basketball coach and then to Loudoun Valley High school where he was the Head Football Coach He started his position as the Athletic Director at Loudoun County High School in 1976 and was there until 2004 (28 years). He then went to Briar Woods High School as their first Athletic Director in 2004. He retired in 2008 after 40 years of service in the Loudoun County Public School system.
Joe was a pioneer in the field of Athletic Administration at the local, state and national level. He was a director for countless District, Region and State athletic events. Joe set the standard for excellence for others to follow. As a District and Regional chairman, his leadership was instrumental in guiding and directing athletics in the Commonwealth throughout his career. In 2007 Joe was selected as the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrator / Athletic Director of the year. Additionally, Joe received the VIAAA Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his dedication and commitment to Interscholastic Athletic Excellence. Joe leaves behind a legacy of excellence to his craft. He touched countless lives over the years. His guidance, leadership, passion, and commitment were an inspiration to many.
After retirement, Joe or Pap to his beloved grandchildren always found time to help with Boy Scout projects, coaching football, baseball and basketball, playing chess, going to swim and track meets or taking the boys hunting and fishing. Family meant so much to him. Joe was an avid sportsman and loved the outdoors. He loved taking care of the Breinig compound in Lucketts by planting trees and managing the land. He cherished the times at the family hunting cabin in Romney with family and friends where countless memories were created.
A celebration of his life will be held at Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg VA at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
A private burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations in his memory can be made to Capital Caring Health or the American Cancer Society.
