Joseph A. Cavallaro, age 95, of Mentor, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 19, 2025. A U.S. Navy Veteran, Joseph was a proud and hardworking individual who led a life full of service to his community and deep devotion to his family.
Born, August 10, 1929, Joseph was the owner/operator of Gulf Gas Station in Mentor and worked as a mechanic throughout his career. His entrepreneurial spirit continued with owning a truck rental and auto repair shop located on Tyler Blvd. in Mentor. In addition to his professional work, Joseph was a dedicated volunteer firefighter in Mentor-On-Lake from 1966 to 1969.
In his personal life, Joseph enjoyed a variety of activities including splitting firewood and gardening. He enjoyed listening to polka music and cheering on his favorite baseball team, the Cleveland Guardians, with the help of his trusty "Alexa," who was often asked, "What time is it?"
Joseph cherished his trips to the casino to play the slot machines, traveling to his childhood home in Hepzibah, West Virginia, as well as visits to Florida and New York.
He is survived by his cherished grandchildren: Carrie (Carl) Calabrese, Dana Gardner (Tom Amato), Jamie Schura (Adam), Cody Gardner (Codi Mae), Brittany Zivcic (Josh), Mackenzie Gardner, and Christina Cavallaro; and his great-grandchildren: Christopher Amato, Brock, Coltin, Braydon, and Coby Calabrese, Jack Schura, Madison and Emma Zivcic, and Adrianna Gardner.
Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucy Cavallaro (nee Amantea); his children Roseann Gardner, Joseph Cavallaro, and Gary Cavallaro (Claudia); his parents Vincenzo and Rosa Cavallaro; and his brothers Anthony and Larry Cavallaro.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Joseph at 9:30 AM on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at St. John Vianney Church in Mentor. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center Street (Route 615, north of Route 2) in Mentor, on Friday, January 24, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
