Joseph Chas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home - Middletown on Nov. 3, 2023.
Joseph "Joe" Arthur Chas II, loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend passed away on October 27, 2023 surrounded by his family, at the age of 73.
He was born April 26, 1950 to the late Joseph Arthur and Edith Biddle Chas of Middletown, Delaware. A lifelong resident of Middletown, Delaware, Joe graduated from Middletown High School ~ Class of 1968 where he played Football and played saxophone in the jazz band. In his younger years Joe spent countless hours on the Emerson farm milking cows and baling hay with lifelong friends who became brothers. He spent many years riding motorcycles across the Mid-Atlantic with the Delaware Enduro Riders. Joe also proudly served his country in the Delaware National Guard.
Joe served the MOT community in business for himself for over 50 years including Chas Gas & Appliance, Broad Street Health & Fitness, and Chas Pools Inc. He was a member of the Rotary Club and was on the Planning and Zoning committee for the Town of Middletown. Through his businesses he sponsored several youth athletic teams and many other philanthropic contributions throughout the years.
Joe was an active member of the Townsend Fire Company, Station 26, for eleven years and a Life Member of Volunteer Hose Company, Station 27, of Middletown. He was also a Life Member of Union Lodge #5 AF & AM of Middletown for over 50 years.
An avid outdoorsman and constant wildlife conservationist, Joe was a supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. for over 36 years. He held many leadership roles within the organization such as Appoquinimink Chapter Chair, State Secretary, State Chairman, and Regional Vice-President of the South-Central Atlantic as well as many other roles within the organization. Joe was also a committee member of the National Wild Turkey Federation and a life member of Buckmasters.
Joe had a love of music that was fostered by his mother, Edith. They would sing at home as well as in the choir at Summit United Methodist Church. He continued to love music throughout his life and always had a song in his heart, a lyric at the ready, and a dance step or two.
Nothing was more important to Joe than his family and friends. Words of encouragement or correction, guidance or counseling; Joe's charismatic and comforting personality brought a smile to everyone that he encountered. He could light up any room he walked into with a joke or a song and put you at ease with a talk that he would keep in confidence. Whether family by blood-relation or family by choice, Joe always made you feel like you belonged.
Joe is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kathy Chas, daughter, Amanda Chas-Crooker (Curt) and Drew Chas (Amy) and is lovingly known as "Pop" to four grandchildren, Delaney, Kallie, Finley Jo Chas, and Cael Crooker. Also survived by many beloved family members.

I first meet Joe when he had his appliance store. He treated me and my wife , who were very new in the area, like he knew us for years. I did business with Joe for a very long time. We will miss Joe.

Kathy and family I am so deeply saddened by the loss of Joe. You all will be in my prayers. I know it will not be easy, God will give you the grace. I have great memories of working in your house and talking with Joe. I have to say I really enjoyed his laugh and his love for his family.
