Joseph A. Cohorst, 72, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2025 at HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL.

A memorial visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25, 2025 at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to Leukemia And Lymphoma Society or The Salvation Army. Online condolences may be shared at www.johnsonandsonsfh.com.

Joseph was born on September 10, 1952, in Effingham, IL the son of Urban J. Cohorst and Olenda (Meier) Cohorst. He married Deborah Tharp on September 7, 1987 in Effingham, IL.

Joseph was employed at Martin's Food as a meat cutter, then World Color Press as a pressman and U.S. Express as an over the road driver. He loved exploring new places, riding his Harley, trout fishing, playing pinochle, watching Jeopardy, and spending time with family and friends. Joe was larger than life, always ready to lend a helping hand, and never met a stranger.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Deborah Cohorst of Effingham; daughters, Alissa (Jeremy) Jones and Rachel Koester; adored granddaughter, Lia Jones and partner-in-crime grandson, Nolan Koester. He leaves behind his brother, John (Linda) Cohorst of Effingham; and sister, Nancy (Charles) Stevens of Fountain Hills, Arizona; sister-in-law, Mary Ann (Joseph) Moon; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and joins them with the Holy Father in Heaven.
