Joseph W. Conover passed away surrounded by his loving family on July 16, 2025, at the age of 74.
Joe will be deeply missed by his wife Mary Conover (nee Rebelo), son Jay (Terri), granddaughter Natalie, Brother-in-law Mark Rebelo (Ellie), Christopher Lonergan (Janice), Chad Lonergan (Dawn) and Mark Rebelo, Jr. and his niece, Danielle Loeffel (Bob) along with extended family and friends.
He is predeceased by his parents Walter and Florence, and his sister Linda Lonergan.
Joe lived a life of service to others before self. After graduating from Abington Senior High School in 1968, Joe followed in his father's footsteps and joined the United States Navy, where he proudly served active and reserve duty until 1974. In 1971, Joe continued his belief in public service and joined the Abington Township Police Department as an emergency dispatcher, a role he cherished. In 1970, Joe met Mary and they would begin their lives together, marrying in 1974. In 1981, Joe changed his roles in the Abington Township Police Department and fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a Police Officer. Joe proudly served as a police officer until his retirement in 2010. During his time with the police department Joe was known for his dedication and commitment to the community and his fellow officers that he proudly and diligently served. While Joe worked as a dispatcher and as a police officer, he further served the community as a member of the Abington and McKinley Fire Companies. Joe's belief in service to others has been taught to his family and friends, who include police officers, teachers, nurses, and firefighters today. After Joe's retirement in 2010, he and Mary spent some much-deserved time traveling and enjoying life together. They enjoyed traveling to such places as Alaska, Gettysburg, and nearly yearly trips to Washington, DC, for National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week. In his spare time, Joe attended numerous police insignia trading shows, where he was known for his extensive collection and displays of police memorabilia, developing lifelong fraternal friendships. Mary always accompanied him as his "fun table minder", with the promise of breakfast and/or dinner as her treat.
One of Joe's greatest joys was spending time with his loved ones, particularly his "Peanut" Natalie. Joe was immensely proud of his family and all they have and will accomplish. Joe's legacy is that those he loved and cherished agree that service to others before self leads to a meaningful and impactful life, just like Joe led. Family and friends are invited to Joe's Life Celebration on August 13, 2025 from 10am until 12pm, followed by a memorial service, at the Craft- Givnish of Abington Funeral Home 1801 Old York Road, Abington, PA, 19001. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe's memory can be made the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, and/or the Darren Daulton Foundations. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Joseph, please visit our floral store.

A man of Service, who loved his Country, loved his community but most of all loved his family and his wife unconditionally. He had a sense of humor and he was crafty, I loved those Legos which I enjoyed and admired every time I visited he was like family to me he will be greatly missed. I know he is looking down on us and he´s taking care of the loved ones we once knew and till we meet again I salute you and thank you for your Service.

Attended the PA State Municipal Police Academy and started in the APD with Joe. He was both a dedicated police officer and fire fighter. A true public servant. He will be missed.

I knew Joe from our years at Abington H.S. He was in my gym class, and I got to know and like him pretty well. I to a photo of him doing an overhead press pretty easily with more weight than I could lift.
Joe was 1 year ahead of me, and I lost track of him over the years. But it looks like from what I´ve read in here, he did really well for himself as a police officer.
My condolences to his family.
