Joseph “Joe” Fignar, age 90, of Greencastle, PA passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024, in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born June 3, 1934, in Coaldale, PA, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Wahal) Fignar.
Joe served in the Army honorably from 1953 to 1957. He was beginning to readjust to civilian life when he was called back into service for the Cuban Missile Crisis as a result of his specialty as an artillery forward spotter. Later, Joe worked for Mack Truck Inc. as a machinist. He loved the outdoors. He maintained many bird feeders around his home so he could enjoy bird watching. He was an Eagle Scout and volunteered as a Junior Girl Scout Assistant Leader. Joe was a member of the Knight of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Greencastle, and American Legion of Mercersburg post # 517. He was also a member at St. Marks the Evangelist Catholic Church here in Greencastle. He was a devoted husband, father, and family man.
Joe is survived by his four sons; Joseph T. Fignar with wife Christina E. Fignar of Fort Loudon, Thomas J. Fignar with wife Mayette C. Fignar of Williamson, Robert J. Fignar with wife Barbara L Fignar of Fort Loudon, and John J. Fignar with wife Kristina M. Fignar of Cameron North Carolina; 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; plus honorary son Bob Wagner. Joe was married for 40 plus years to the love of his life, RoseMarie (Hill) Fignar, who precedes him in death; along with his parents, three daughters and his brother John Fignar Jr.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the St Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church 385 S. Ridge Ave, Greencastle, PA, where Father Augusty Valomchalil will officiate. Interment will follow the funeral service at the Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg where Honors will be performed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St Mark the Evanagelist Catholic Church, Greencastle, PA.
