Joseph T. Freeman
May 28, 1954 – August 10, 2025
Joseph T. “Joe” Freeman, 71, of Wakefield, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2025, at Massachusetts General Hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in Wakefield, Joe was the beloved son of the late Felix A. and Mary K. (Sullivan) Freeman. He was a 1972 graduate of Wakefield High School and a lifelong learner. Joe attended Northeastern University, earned his MBA from Boston University, and later pursued his passion for helping others by earning his nursing degree from Northern Essex Community College, becoming a registered nurse in 2007.
Joe devoted his career to serving others. He worked in and supervised group homes for adults with physical and intellectual disabilities in Wakefield and later served for more than 40 years as executive director of the Kimi Nichols Center in Plaistow, New Hampshire.
Affectionately known as “Joey” and “Uncle Joe,” he had an extraordinary gift for making people feel welcome. Whether offering wise counsel, delivering a quick-witted remark, or sharing a hearty laugh, Joe brought joy to every gathering. He will be remembered for his big heart, generous spirit, and unwavering positivity.
Joe cherished time spent with family—especially evenings by the campfire, swapping old stories and creating new memories. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: a good book, lively music, delicious food, and a well-earned nap. His curious nature inspired him to explore new places and embrace the world with open eyes.
He is survived by his loving siblings: John “Jack” A. Freeman and his wife Ellen of Helotes, TX; William J. Freeman and his wife Marilyn of Reading; Felix A. Freeman of Wakefield; Mary H. Colella and her husband Stephen F. of Wakefield; and Paul M. Freeman and his wife Susanne of Bedford, NH. He also leaves nine nieces and nephews and 17 cherished great-nieces and great-nephews.
Joe’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and staff of the Mass General Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit for their extraordinary care and compassion.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Joe’s life at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield, on Monday, August 18, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St., Wakefield, on Tuesday, August 19, at 10 a.m.
