Joseph Gann Obituary

Joseph Wayne Gann Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated provider, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 1, 2025, at Grandview Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He was 73 years old. In his final moments, he was holding the hand of Beverly, his devoted wife of 51 years, a testament to the enduring love and partnership they shared.

Born on August 28, 1952, in Birmingham, Alabama, Joseph was the son of the late Lewis and Sarah Gann and one of six children. His parents instilled in him a powerful work ethic, which began early in life. At just six years old, Joseph guided his blind Uncle Ed as they sold brooms and mops door-to-door in Birmingham. His "sweet Uncle Ed" rewarded him with a dime for every sale, and his childhood charm ensured business was always booming. Joseph's dedication was legendary; his family fondly recalls that he never missed a day of work, even going in sick or hurt-once working with an ankle so swollen he couldn't tie his work boots.

Joseph graduated from Hueytown High School in 1971 and continued his education at Jefferson State College before honorably serving in the National Guard. His distinguished career included 30 years at Butler Manufacturing before retiring from U.S. Steel in 2017.

To know Joseph was to love him. He never met a stranger, was kind to everyone he met, and possessed an incredible spirit, always managing to put a positive spin on any negative situation. A man known for his servant's heart, Joseph's life was a reflection of his strong faith. He led by example, helping neighbors, giving generously to those in need, and consistently supporting the Salvation Army. He often shared the words of his faith with his children, reminding them that "faith the size of a mustard seed could move mountains" and offering comfort with the phrase, "This too shall pass." He also had a great sense of humor, often declaring, with a mix of truth and irony, "The Working man doesn't have a Chance."

Joseph's greatest passion was his family. He married the love of his life, Beverly, in February 1974, and together they raised two children. He found great joy in being with his family, especially at the ball field. Even after working a twelve-hour shift, he never missed a game for which he served as a volunteer coach at McAdory. His other joys included taking his family on wonderful vacations and being a devoted fan of Alabama Football. Joseph shared a particularly special and loving bond with his granddaughter, Annmarie, who lovingly called him Papa.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Sarah Gann, and his siblings, Pete Gann, Butch Gann, Brenda Castleberry, and Phyllis Gann.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Gann; his son, Joseph Gann Jr and daughter-in-law Lauren; his daughter, Kim Gann Heintz and son-in-law Chris; his cherished granddaughter, Annmarie Gann; his sister, Tina Hicks and brother-in-law Glenn; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom he loved so dearly.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., his service to follow at Charter Funeral Home, located at 25 US-31, Calera, AL 3504. A graveside service will immediately follow at Pine Lawn Cemetery, 207 Highway 47 S, Columbiana, AL 35051.
