Joseph D. "Joe" Gill, a devoted husband, loving father, and family protector, passed away peacefully at his home in Ogden, Utah, on September 24, 2025, at the age of 81. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, hard work, and a perfectly tended garden.
Born in Ogden on November 29, 1943, to the late Hyrum Layton and Ilene Mabel Varney Gill, Joe was a lifelong resident of the area. At the adventurous age of 17, he joined the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country for three years in Germany. After his military service, Joe spent several years on the open road as a semi-truck driver before beginning a long and distinguished career in Civil Service at Hill Air Force Base, where his dedication earned him multiple awards.
Joe was a man of many passions. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed fishing, and was a master in the kitchen, delighting family and friends with his cooking. He was most at home, however, with his hands in the earth, cultivating a garden that was the envy of the neighborhood. With an old-fashioned charm and a quick wit, Joe was the family jokester, and his presence guaranteed that laughter was never far away.
Above all else, Joe’s greatest joy was his family. He was the fiercely protective and loving husband of Charlotte Gill, whom he married in 1993. He was a proud father and will be deeply missed by his children, Andrea Lynn (Ken) Hughes, Tresa Hernandez (Eric Carr), Rich Hernandez Jr. (Mary), Lydia Hernandez, and Jeramiah Hernandez.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Charlotte; his children; his brother, Brent Gill; and a host of grandchildren who will miss their grandpa dearly, Shawn Sagen (Mariah Falkner), Charlie Hughes, Kyle Carr, Haylee Carr, Hope Carr, Grace (Joshua) Martinez, Audry Hernandez, Bryce (Brooke) Hernandez, and Taylor (Logan) Williams; as well as several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Chester Joseph Gill; his parents, Hyrum and Ilene; and his brothers, Jerry and Robert Gill.
Funeral services will be held to honor Joe’s life on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
Joe wanted to be remembered as a devoted husband and loving father, and he was so much more. His protective spirit and warm heart will be forever missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
