Joseph (Joe / Butch) Edward Gliebe III was born September 7, 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio to Clara (Sis) and Joseph (Joe) Gliebe, both of whom are deceased. Joe is survived by his wife, Cay; children, Karen DeWysocki, Andrew Gliebe, Jennifer Fitzgerald, and Stephanie Hinze; nine grandchildren, and sisters, Sue Ann Branstein, Jeanne Gliebe, Joanne Shields, Rosemarie Clawson, and Lori Ann Green.
Joe was an avid baseball player showing talent that afforded him the opportunity to play in a minor league prior to joining the Navy. He was at his best when pitching and retained that ability to hit anything he was aiming at to the end. His draft number came up and Joe made the decision to enlist in the US Navy. He served for 29 years retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. Joe served on several submarines as an electronics technician and added Navy diver and nuclear power to his skill set. He received a direct commission from Congress to the rank of Ensign. Joe became a consummate ship driver on the USS Mississippi, and then served multiple roles leading the repair of Navy submarines on the East Coast. He finished his career at Commander, Submarine Forces Atlantic.
Joe continued with his nuclear power qualifications when he joined Commonwealth Edison in Chicago, IL where he was again involved in the maintenance of nuclear power plants. He was soon recognized for his expertise and moved to the International Nuclear Power Organization in Atlanta, Georgia where he performed qualification audits at nuclear power plants throughout the United States and in Russia.
Joe's passion for cars led him to make a decision to leave the corporate world behind and start his own company, Automotive Cosmetic Repair, where he was a mobile dent and ding repair technician for cars across the northside of Atlanta. While running this business he continued to work on cars at home and at "the warehouse." He built a 1955 Porsche Spyder from scratch and fully restored two MGBGTs.
Joe's other passion was dogs. There was not a dog that he didn't love whether it was his or someone else's. And dogs loved him. For several years he volunteered with Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, driving dogs that had been abandoned or left at shelters ensuring they were transitioned to foster care until adopted.
Joe was most proud of his children and grandchildren. He loved each of them and they loved him. He will be missed by many family and friends. Rest in peace, Joe/Butch.
