Joseph Valentino Gullo, a true Renaissance man and lifelong tinkerer, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 7, 2025. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Valentine's Day, 1939, he was a proud graduate of Collinwood High School. A resident of Chesterland for many years, he spent his later years in Kirtland.
Joseph was known to all as a jack of all trades and a master of many. With a deep and abiding love for history and all things mechanical, his passions were reflected in the extraordinary projects he took on throughout his life. He was a skilled pilot who famously rebuilt a Meyers OTW biplane from the ground up before taking to the skies. His hands were just as comfortable with antique cars, and his dedication to their restoration was legendary; if a part couldn't be found, he would simply make it himself. Beyond his mechanical talents, Joseph was known as a good friend and neighbor to many, always ready to lend a hand or a word of advice. His loyal companion, his dog Katie, who passed before him, was treated by him like heaven on earth.
For 40 years, Joseph was a proud member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 33, having worked for many years at Duct Fabricators. His craftsmanship and dedication to his trade were unmatched.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Shirley Mae (Pinney Springsteel). He leaves behind a loving family, including his children Anita Thomas, Angela Gullo, Joanne Gullo, and Timothy Gullo. He was also a devoted stepfather to Steve (Cindy) Springsteel, Daniel (Jen) Springsteel, and Glenn (Michele) Springsteel. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, George (Lauren) Thomas, Timothy Carmello Gullo, JP, and Spencer Springsteel, Rachel Springsteel, Jimmy and Emily Springsteel, as well as his great-grandchildren, Isaac and Rose Mary Thomas.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Carmello and Mary Gullo; his brothers Angelo (Geri) Gullo, Russell (Madge) Gullo, Louis Gullo, and William (Lucy) Gullo; his daughter-in-law Janet Lynn Gullo; and his granddaughters, Cecelia Jane Gullo and Megan Marie Springsteel. And of course, his favorite child, Katie, she was a good girl and brought him home.
Private family services will be held.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Rescue Village, 15463 Chillicothe Road, Novelty, Ohio 44072, or go to www.give.rescuevillage.org. www.give.rescuevillage.org
