Joseph G. Hagloch, age 75, of Dover, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2023.
Born March 25, 1948 in Canton, he was a son of the late Henry I. and Mary E. Wherley Hagloch. Joe grew up in the east end of Dover surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as neighborhood kids - including the Maurer brothers, Don and Bob. Joe felt that it was a great childhood.
He went on to graduate from Dover High School in 1966, and attended the University of Florida in Gainesville. However, Joe paid more attention to social education than academic life and was drafted into the United States Army in 1969.
Joe underwent military police training at Fort Gordon in Georgia, and was assigned to the 142nd MP Company, 3rd Platoon, in Taegu, South Korea, where he served for 16 months. He made many friends in the close-knit group of MPs and enjoyed their biennial reunions. Joe held the Korean people in great esteem, and even managed to learn a bit of the language beyond normal GI talk and MP commands.
Following his discharge, Joe resumed his studies, first at Kent State Tuscarawas, and then at Ohio State, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He continued his education at Kent, ultimately earning his masters degree in library science. More importantly, it was there that he met his future wife, Susan L. Beard, who survives; the couple were wed on December 18, 1976 and have been married for 46 years.
Joe's working life was that of a "circuit-riding medical librarian" for several area hospitals providing them with scholarly medical information. While serving Union Hospital in Dover, he arranged for the very first internet connection to be installed in the medical library - naturally, in November of 1996. His vocation and avocation were one in the same.
In addition to his wife, Susan, he is survived by his nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Grant R. and Gregor A. Hagloch.
A graveside service, which is open to the public, will be held Saturday, April 15, at 11 a.m. in Dover Burial Park; Pastor Dotty Hartzell of St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover will officiate.
Joe requested that, instead of flowers, donations in his memory be made to the Tuscarawas County Public Library, 121 Fair Ave. NW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663.
