Joseph Michael Herrig, 84, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away on March 20th, 2025. He was born on August 24th, 1940, in Iona, Minnesota, to Alfred and Clara Herrig. Joe was a proud graduate of Iona St. Columba Catholic High School in 1958, where he developed a deep love for his faith and remained a devout Catholic throughout his life.
Following high school, Joe worked at a lumberyard in Iona before enlisting in the U.S. Army in September 1960. He served as a truck mechanic and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. It was during a visit home that Joe met the love of his life, Nancy Guidi, at the Dakota Ballroom in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Their connection was instant, and after many letters and phone calls, they were married on June 29th, 1963, in Columbus, Georgia. After Joe's honorable discharge from the Army, the couple settled in Sioux Falls, where they raised a family.
Joe’s proudest accomplishment was becoming a father in 1980 to a son, Michael. A passionate sports enthusiast, Joe never missed a game that involved Mike, whether it was baseball, football, or hockey. His love for sports extended to his granddaughter, Lily, and his unwavering support for Minnesota sports teams.
A man of many talents, Joe was also an avid member of Walleyes Unlimited, with fishing and hunting being among his great passions, especially when shared with his son, Mike.
Joe had a long and fulfilling career. He worked as a truck mechanic at Terrace Park Dairy before spending 32 years as a delivery salesman for Old Home Bread. He retired in 2002, but his love for tinkering led him to own and operate AB Shaver Shop, where he worked for nearly 20 years.
Joe is survived by his wife, Nancy Herrig; his son, Mike (Abby) Herrig; his granddaughter, Lily Herrig of Sioux Falls; his brother, Ed (Marilyn) Herrig of Wilmont, MN; his sister, Marge (Gerry) Swart of Atkin, MN; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Herrig; his sister, Rose Haeg; his parents, Alfred and Clara Herrig; and his grandson, Joseph (JoJo) Herrig.
Joe's legacy of faith, love, and devotion to family and community will forever be cherished by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
