She was born on January 28, 1926, in Carroll, IA, daughter of Arthur and Frances Sievers. She was raised in Carroll, IA, and graduated from Iowa State University.
Marjorie worked at Crescent and served in numerous organizations, becoming an active community leader. She loved serving in many ways within her Catholic church, participating in Catholic Cursillo weekends, being on the team of the formation of Christian Experience Weekends, and serving meals at the Dubuque Rescue Mission. She was also active in the Women's Giving Circle of the Greater Community Foundation of Dubuque. Her greatest love was the Theresians in which she was a leader in the formation of several groups in Dubuque as well as serving as President of the National Theresian Board.
On October 7, 1950, she married Eldon T. Herrig at Nativity Catholic Church in Dubuque.
Marjorie was a devoted family woman, extending her love beyond her immediate family to exchange students and friends she considered family. Her heart was a sanctuary of warmth, and she celebrated every occasion with handwritten cards filled with love and thoughtful messages. Her deep faith and love for Jesus guided her life, inspiring those around her to embrace kindness and gratitude.
An avid nature lover, Marjorie found joy in the beauty of the world around her. She cherished her walks in the fresh air and the songs of the birds that filled her garden. Her love of animals, especially birds, was a testament to her gentle spirit. Marjorie was also dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle, believing in exercise and nutritious eating-though she never turned down dessert, particularly if it involved chocolate or a glass of wine shared with friends.
Marjorie had a gift for gathering people together. Whether hosting friends or sharing moments with her Theresian Sisters, she created spaces filled with laughter, love, and meaningful conversation. Her wit and intelligence made every gathering memorable, and her adventurous spirit took her around the world, enriching her life with diverse experiences and friendships.
Marjorie and Eldon shared a long, loving marriage filled with laughter and shared dreams. Together, they built a family that reflects the values of love and faith, with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will carry on her legacy of kindness and compassion.
As we remember Marjorie, we celebrate a life well-lived-a life that touched many hearts and inspired others to embrace love, faith, and the beauty of nature. Her spirit will live on in the memories of her family and friends, and she will be deeply missed.
Those left to cherish her memory are her seven children; Joe Herrig of Dubuque, his former wife Marla Tranel, and their children Rachel (husband Edward, and their children Lila and Oscar), Tyler (wife Samantha, and their children Maeve and Vivian), and Jenna (husband Oliver); Larry Herrig (wife Laura) of Dubuque, and their children Jeremy and Joshua; Mary Beth Greene (husband Dave) of Duluth, GA, and their children Brooke (husband Steve, and their daughter Ava) and Nate (wife Laurel); Pete Herrig (wife Tina) of Dubuque, and their daughter Lauren (husband Ross McKay, and their children Henry, Vince, and Nora); Steve Herrig (wife Natalee) of Sarasota, FL, and their children Nick (wife Lilly, and their children Onyx and Oliver), Hannah (husband Zachary, and their son Carson), and Andie and Maria; Therese Culotta of Lakewood Ranch, FL, her former husband Stan McNabb, and their children Courtney, Clay, and Gracie McNabb; Kristie Arthofer (husband Jerry) of Dubuque, and their children Allison (fiancé Kevin, and their children Blake and Grant), Whitney (husband Brian Sanger, and their children Graham, Charlie, James, Evelyn, Via, Eldon, and Eleanora), Mitchell (fiancé Amanda Treanor, and their son Theodore), and Addy, and exchange student daughter Nancy Gasell of East Dubuque, IL. She is also survived by her brother, Gerald (Nancy) Sievers, of Council Bluffs, IA and their children, Chris and Ellen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Dorthy "Dot" and Bernadette; and daughter-in-law, Janet Hutchinson Herrig, mother of Nick Herrig.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Dubuque, Rescue Mission, Bethany Homes, or St. Columbkille's Church in Marjorie's honor, reflecting her love for community and service.
The family would like to thank Home Instead, especially to Mary Shallow of Hazel Green, Wisconsin.
