Joseph Marvin Hougen was born on April 19, 1952, in
Bellingham, Washington. He gracefully completed his life's journey on December 30, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at age 73. His passing leaves a legacy of warmth, kindness, and adventure that inspires all who knew him.
A man of extraordinary talent and boundless spirit, Joseph's life reflected dedication and passion. He holds two master's degrees, in psychology and business. As President of Peter Pan Seafoods Processing, he led with integrity and vision.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Joseph was a Renaissance man who embraced the outdoors. He cherished hunting and fishing, found serenity in sailing, and soared the skies piloting his plane. A true lover of sports, he shared many memorable moments playing golf around the world with his beloved brother. His adventures took him far and wide, with Australia and New Zealand holding special places in his heart. An avid wine collector, Joseph enjoyed savoring the complexities of life, one bottle at a time.
Guided by his Christian faith, Joseph epitomized the virtues of kindness and integrity-a true "gentleman's gentleman." His loving and generous spirit will forever be missed.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Anne Louise Hougen and Marvin Frank Hougen, and his first wife, Denise Ambrose Hougen. He is survived by his beloved bride, Sandra Hougen, whom he met through a serendipitous blind date; they shared nearly ten beautiful years together, marked by love and camaraderie. His cherished family includes his brother, Jeffrey Hougen, of Rocklin, CA; his sister, Lisa Jagar, and her husband, David, of Ballard, WA; his baby sister, Jody Gelormino, and her husband, James, of Flatlake, MT; his step-sons, Alan Smith and his wife, Jayme, of Houston, TX, and Christopher Smith of Seattle, WA; and his many cherished nieces and nephews. Joseph was the proud grandfather of three precious grandsons: Henry, Theodore, and Arthur.
Though his presence will be sorely missed, the light of Joseph's legacy endures. A service to celebrate his remarkable life will be held at a later date in Washington State, as determined by his family.
In the vibrant waves and winds of life, Joseph Marvin Hougen found his true north: the ones he most loved. May his stories, values, and love continue to inspire us as we carry forward his spirit of adventure and compassion forever.
