Joseph Hundertmark Obituary

Joseph Hundertmark

November 10, 1979 - September 7, 2024

Winston-Salem, NC - Joseph J. Hundertmark died in a vehicle accident that also took the life of his long -time friend and fellow band member, Nathan Harris, on September 7, 2024. Born on November 10, 1979 in Easton, MD. He was the son of the late James A. Hundertmark and Mary Alice Gaddis Hundertmark.

He grew up in Easton and graduated from Easton High School in 1997 where he played marching trombone in the band, sang in the chorus and was a member of the drama club, where he co-starred in a production of "West Side Story". He went on to graduate from North Carolina School of the Arts with a degree in classical guitar performance. After college he belonged to several different bands in Winston-Salem before moving to New York City in 2007. In 2011, he opened with Cirque du Soleil's newest show, "Zarkana", at Radio City Music Hall as a guitarist with the band. From there he played in Madrid and Moscow until the show landed permanently in Las Vegas. In 2015, he became the musical director for Cirque du Soleil's "Joya" in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. He had been playing music up and down the east coast since his return from Mexico at the start of the pandemic. In addition to Cirque du Soleil, Joe had been involved in several bands nationwide and Canada over the course of his musical career. He was a tender soul who loved everything music and had a passion for nature.

He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved mother of over 30 years, Ann Hanlein Hundertmark; a nephew and niece, Jeremy Lee and Cameron Ann Hundertmark of Omaha, NE; an aunt, DeeDee Thompson of Frederick, MD; an uncle, Don Thompson of Harpers Ferry, WV; and their children, Jordan and Devon of Frederick, MD. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lee Hundertmark and Joe Hanlein.

A memorial service and musical tribute will be held in Winston-Salem the last weekend in November. A Celebration of Life will be held in Easton, MD at a date to be determined. Announcements will be made.

I'm not sure what's harder, reading this obituary, or trying to find the words to express the profound sense of loss I feel. Joe was my first friend when I ventured off on my own to college. We were roommates. With us both being from Maryland, we connected immediately. That connection quickly shifted into a bond that morphed into a brotherhood.

Even as I stumble through writing this note, I hear his laugh in my mind's ear - reminding me of his incomparable sense of humor. Humor and laughter defined Joe. He was as skilled at finding a laugh as he was at playing music - which was pure and inspired.

Though he is no longer with us in this physical world, his mark is permanent in the hearts of those who knew him.

I will miss Joe's presence in my life as much as I would miss the warmth of the Sun.

In this moment, right now, as I write, and as those whose eyes read this note, know that Joseph Hundertmark was a person who shared and felt the love of many - and that love lives as an undeniable force.

Joe, my friend, my brother, you are missed.
