Joey was born in Vienna, Georgia, to the late Edward Jackson James and Mary Stalnaker James. He was married to Janet Pitts James for 53 years until her passing on October 26, 2024. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Eddie James.
Joey was patriotic which was evident by his service in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Joey was a passionate Atlanta Falcons fan and dedicated his time to coaching youth sports. He also loved watching "Law & Order" and, in recent years, took great interest in exploring his family's genealogy, reflecting his deep love for family. Joey cherished his "Boys", Wally and Wilbur. He was an electrician for Georgia-Pacific and retired in 2009 following 38 years of service.
Joey is survived by his children: Jeannie James Larkin (Paul) of Leesburg, Georgia; Maribeth James Slade (Rusty) of Cordele; Jacqulyne Ashley James Sirmans (Keith) of Valdosta; and Edward Jackson James (Sarah) of Valdosta. He was a proud grandfather to Jonathan Stokes (Heidi), Elizabeth Voiner (Will), Joseph Stokes, Hunter Slade (Bailey), Wesley Larkin (Leslie), Makenley Slade, Chandler Larkin, Madelyn James, Allie James, Harper James, and Ella James. His great-grandchildren include Paul Larkin, Luka Stokes, Amelia Voiner, Finn Stokes, and Elsie Larkin. Joey is also survived by his sister-in-law, Donna Rousey of Cordele.
