Joseph "Jay" R. Walrod passed away suddenly on June 20, 2025, at the age of 61. Jay was born in Pensacola, FL, and moved to Alameda, California in 1979 when his father served as a commanding officer at the (now closed) Alameda Naval Air Station.

Jay was a devoted husband, loving father, and a cherished friend to many. He graduated from Encinal High School and later attended California State University, Hayward where he earned his Bachalors degree in Geography. He built a successful career in computer networking, and after retiring, he devoted himself fully to raising his two sons.

A passionate coach and supporter of youth soccer, Jay gave generously of his time as a coach of Alameda Soccer Club and supporter of Bay Oaks soccer, Alameda Attack Lacrosse, Alameda Youth Basketball, and Alameda High School Soccer and Football. Known for his warm spirit and quick wit, he was a true pillar of the Alameda community and a best friend to many. He also had a deep love for cooking and was a fantastic chef-especially when preparing meals for family and friends, which brought him immense joy.

Jay is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia, and his two sons, David and Derek, cousins Claudia Simone, Paul Simone, and Elena Sabella. He was preceded in death by his parents David J. Walrod, Claire A. Walrod, and his siblings Jeffrey L. Walrod and Valerie J. Walrod.

A memorial service will be held on July 15, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 1700 Santa Clara Avenue, Alameda.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice, in Jay's memory.
