Joseph “Joe” Gurule Obituary

Visit the DeVargas Funeral Home and Crematory - Espanola website to view the full obituary.

Joseph (Joe) Gurule, 64, went home to be with our Lord on July 16, 2025. A lifelong resident of Cuarteles, NM, he was deeply rooted in his community and cherished the place he called home.

Joseph was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He brought love, laughter, and warmth into the lives of those around him.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joe V. and Carmelita Q. Gurule; father-in-law Gene Gonzales; sister Olivia Gurule; brothers-in-law Valentin Montoya and Rodney Gonzales.

He is survived by his loving wife Michelle; sons Chris Gurule (Sandra) and Martin Perraglio; daughters Nicole Gurule and Brittany Gurule (Adan); beloved grandson, Matthew Gurule. He is also survived by his brothers, Tom (Margie), Tim (Patricia), and Ben (Suzanne); sisters, Ymelda (Lenny) Roybal and Ernestine Montoya; brothers-in-law, Bennie Sandoval, Gabriel (Inez) Gonzales, and Pat (Lisa) Gonzales; mother-in-law, Clara Guillen (Nick); godson, Michael Gonzales; goddaughter, Liva Archuleta; and his dear Tía Lourdes Gonzales (Cliff). Joseph leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom were touched by his generous spirit and kind heart.

Joseph’s life was dedicated to serving his family and friends. He retired from the City of Santa Fe in April 2010, but his commitment to helping others continued. After retirement, he worked at DeVargas Funeral Home and the Towa Golf Course, remaining active and engaged in his community. He was passionate about hunting and fishing with his family and took great pride in caring for his garden and orchard. His garden was always immaculate—a true reflection of the dedication and pride he poured into it. He loved making people laugh and was always joking around, bringing joy and laughter wherever he went.  Joseph left a lasting impression on everyone he met, effortlessly forming friendships wherever life took him. With his quick wit and warm personality, he often joked about starting a business called "Rent-A-Friend." He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A rosary will take place on Monday July 28, 2025 at 10:00am at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz followed by a mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Burial will take place at 1:00pm at the Rosario Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM.

Serving as Pallbearers are his children Chris Gurule, Nicole Gurule, Martin Perraglio, Brittany Gurule, grandson Matthew Gurule and special nephew Jacob Gurule.
