Joseph "Joe" P. Kelly of
Dumont, NJ passed away on June 15, 2023 in
Wyckoff, NJ in the company of family.
He is survived by sister Geraldine Quku of
Vero Beach, FL and Mary Argenti of
Pompano Beach, FL, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Joe was predeceased by his father, Joseph A. Kelly and mother, Margaret Kelly (Coleman), sister Helen Collins of
Westwood, NJ and 6 brothers: Gerard Kelly of
Dumont, NJ; Raymond Kelly of Columbia, CT; Gene Kelly of
River Vale, NJ; Robert Kelly of
Dumont, NJ; Michael Kelly of
Atlantic City, NJ; and John Kelly of Ft.
Myers, FL. Joe is also predeceased by niece Theresa Scharf of Warwick, NJ and nephew Thomas Kelly of
Closter, NJ.
Joe was very involved with each and every member of his family. He orchestrated many family hiking and skiing trips throughout his life, entertaining everyone with his stories and laughter. He made friends everywhere he went by his infectious grin, fun sense of humor and love of life! Joe was also very social and loved to be with people, most especially with his friends at the VFW and the crew at Tommy Fox's Restaurant in Bergenfield.
Next to his big Irish family, Joe's greatest loves were nature and his US Marines family. In 1942, at the age of 18, he left home to serve our country in WWII at Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. When he returned in 1944, he bought a house for his parents and family on Prospect Avenue in
Dumont, NJ where he continued to reside until his passing.
He retired at the age of 55 from PSE&G and lived a very healthy & active lifestyle - swimming, running and working out every day for many years at the Ridgewood YMCA.
Joe's favorite pastimes were hiking and skiing. He loved being outside and found a reason to be there in any kind of weather. He was part of the National Ski Patrol and a member and president of the North Jersey Whiz Skiers. He could be regularly found on the mountain at Mad River Glen, Vermont.
We will always love Joe and he will truly be missed by his loving family and friends to whom he dedicated much of his life and love over the course of his 99 years.
Funeral mass is Friday, June 30th, 11am at St. Elizabeth's Church in
Wyckoff, NJ. His interment will take place at a future date at Mt Carmel Cemetery in
Tenafly, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the US Marine Corps in Joseph P. Kelly's name and honor.
