Joseph Sherwood Mangiapane Sr., of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away on March 25, 2025, at the age of 81. He was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, born on August 30, 1943, to his loving parents, the late Sherwood and Katherine Mangiapane. Joseph is survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Patricia Mangiapane; his son, Joseph Mangiapane Jr. (girlfriend, Ali McFarland); as well as one granddaughter, Molly Mangiapane. He is also survived by a host of extended family and friends, all of whom he loved greatly.
Mangiapane began his 22 year career in the United States Navy in 1965, after graduating from Southeastern Louisiana University. He spent four years on board various naval vessels, some transporting forces to fight in Vietnam and others replenishing underway vessels serving the U.S. fighting task force in Vietnam. During these four years, he served in many positions, including Communications' Officer for the staff, handling of crucial operations. Upon leaving active duty, Mr. Mangiapane remained in the Naval Reserves for 18 years, wherein he was President of the Naval Reserve Association and achieved the rank of commander.
In his civilian life, Commander Mangiapane was a commercial loan officer for various banks and won many awards for his outstanding performances. His professional life was marked by integrity, dedication, and a genuine concern for the financial well-being of his clients.
In his family life, Joseph Sr. enjoyed coaching his son, Joey, and all of Joey's friends in track, football, and baseball at Johnny Bright Playground. He often could be heard reminiscing on his time as "Coach Joe." It was obvious to all who knew him-he truly cherished those years and memories.
In retirement, he voluntarily entertained our aging community in various assisted living facilities in Slidell. His melodious voice and warm presence brought comfort and happiness to many, and his performances were often the highlight of the day for those he serenaded.
Joseph was a man who gave of himself selflessly, always placing the needs of his family and friends above his own. His legacy is one of kindness, compassion, and an enduring love that will continue to inspire those he leaves behind. Joseph was proud of his lifetime service to the United States Navy, his family, his years coaching, his loyal banking customers, and the community of Slidell. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in Slidell. A Funeral Mass will begin at noon. Joseph will be laid to rest with Military Honors in the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery following services. Pat, we are so sorry for your loss and the passing of Joe. We had no idea that there were any problems and was shocked to hear this heartbreaking news. Niecy and I both remember Joe very fondly, and always appreciated the countless hours that he spent entertaining the residents at Greenbriar. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
