Joseph 'Ben' Mathis departed his earthly home unexpectedly on September 22nd, 2024. He was born on December 22, 1948, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and was raised in Warren, Pennsylvania. Ben attended Edinboro State College where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Education and later earned his Master's degree at Shippensburg University. He began his career teaching biology in Frederick County schools. He was a pioneer in bringing computers to the classrooms for FCPS students and teachers. Later in his career, he moved to the central office becoming the Technology Administrator. He retired in 2003 due to health issues. Ben loved his students and their inquiring minds and was often greeted in public by former students who fondly remembered his classes.
Ben is survived by his wife, Jane (Sedon) Mathis. Their marriage of 51 years produced a legacy of four children and 12 grandchildren. Their children Jill Mathis Pangle (JW) of Winchester, Julie Mathis (Amy) of Austin, TX, Scott Mathis (Amy) of Hedgesville, WV, and David Mathis (Kelsey) of Lake Clear, NY will miss him dearly. His grandchildren include Chloe, Josh, Reed, Maggie, Cullen, Finley, Sam, Corbin, Brody, Ava, Georgia, and Mabel.
He is also survived by his sister Ann (Mathis) Spangler of Overland Park, Kansas, brother William Mathis of Carlisle, Pennsylvania and their children and grandchildren.
Ben was an active member of Winchester Hiram Lodge #21 for over 40 years. Time spent with his Masonic brothers brought him much joy and comradery. He was also a lifelong member of Boy Scouts of America achieving the rank of Eagle. He served in many capacities over his youth and adult life; Scout Master, Committee Chair, Wood Badge Leader, NOAC advisor, and was the recipient of many recognitions.
Ben was an active member of Market Street United Methodist Church and held many positions on church committees and sang in the choir. His mission of selfless service continued by supporting Kitchen of Hope as well as serving on the Board of Family Promise of Northern Shenandoah Valley.
He was an avid dog lover. He loved wood-working, reading, classical music, and watching Hallmark movies. He probably passed through the pearly gates and is now playing fetch with his beloved Tillie and Cody.
Visitation will be on Sunday, September 29 from 2 to 4pm with a Masonic memorial beginning at 3:45pm at Jones Funeral home (228 S. Pleasant Valley Road Winchester, VA). A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 30th at 2pm at Market Street United Methodist Church (131 South Cameron St, Winchester,VA). Gifts in his memory can be made to Market Street UMC or Family Promise of Northern Shenandoah Valley.

Dear Jane,

I am sorry to hear of your loss of your husband Ben. May your faith give you strength as you go forward. I´m sure he is enjoying his dogs. My mom in the middle of the night saw and talked to our dogs from my childhood on...calling them clearly by name and was excited to see them. They were waiting for her. She passed a day later at age 96 and a half. Always, Larry Zetterlind
