Joseph Leo McDonald, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on February 2, 2025. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years and best friend, Laura McDonald (née Testone), who passed away in 2012. Their love story began on a fateful night at Chez Vous Roller Rink and Dance Hall in Upper Darby-an evening on which neither had planned to go out. Through fate and a little encouragement from friends, they unknowingly embarked on an evening that would change both of their lives forever. From then on, Joe and Laura were inseparable.
Joe and Laura spent most of their married life in Drexel Hill, where they built a loving home and raised four devoted daughters: Diane Cicchetti (John), Susan Friel (Jeffery), Laura McDonald, and Christine Versak (Christopher). The deep love and values they instilled in their family carried forward to two more generations, including six cherished grandchildren and eleven adored great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy and pride to Joe's life.
Growing up during the Great Depression, Joe's early years were not easy. However, he never let the challenges he faced define him. He attended St. Francis Vocational School in Eddington, Pennsylvania, where he learned valuable skills that helped shape his lifelong work ethic. In August of 1944, at the age of 18, he answered the call to serve his country in World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in the South Pacific, including Guadalcanal and Tulagi Island. In his final years, he was among less than 1% of surviving American World War II veterans, a distinction of which he was very proud.
Following his Naval service, Joe dedicated decades of his life to Philadelphia Gearworks and I-T-E Circuit Breaker Company, where his unwavering work ethic and perfect attendance were a testament to his integrity and commitment.
Beyond his working years, Joe continued to be of service to others. As an active member of the Knights of Columbus, he found fulfillment in giving back to his community, whether through charitable work or simply brightening someone's day with his kindness.
He was a lifelong Philadelphia Phillies fan. He especially enjoyed watching the Phillies team that won the 2008 World Series and took pride in knowing that Chase Utley would be a great player before many knew how talented he would become! That group of players was his favorite.
His interests were simple yet meaningful-he found joy in routine mall walks, driving Laura around everywhere (even if he drove well-below the speed limit), watching Megyn Kelly, Fox News, The Three Stooges, and, most of all, spending time with family.
Joe will be remembered as a man who showed love, kindness, and quiet strength. He had a rare ability to make each of his children and grandchildren feel like they were his favorite, and his unwavering optimism was a testament to the resilience of his spirit.
His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, perseverance, and family will continue through those who had the privilege of knowing him. His family takes comfort in knowing that he has been reunited with his beloved Laura, where their love story continues.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing Tuesday, February 11, 2025 10am St. Bernadette Church, 1035 Turner Ave. Drexel Hill, PA 19026 and to his Funeral Mass 11am in the Church. Burial private.
