Joseph Maurice Mills, affectionately known as Mills, left this world suddenly on August 27, 2025, in Gastonia. Born on January 1, 1963, Joe dedicated most of his life to the construction industry, where he worked tirelessly and with great pride. Throughout his career, he built not just structures but also relationships that would last a lifetime.
He relished every moment spent with his daughters, Shannon Gurley and her husband Zeke and Christin Browning, proudly boasting that they were his proudest accomplishments. Joe's legacy lives on in his grandchildren—Matthew Griffin, Max Gurley, Gunnar Gurley, Brennan Browning, Kinsley Troutman,—each of whom brought him joy beyond measure. He embraced every family gathering, filled with laughter and camaraderie, creating memories that will forever be cherished.
He enjoyed fishing on peaceful afternoons, expertly fixing cars and tinkering with small engines, always ready to lend a helping hand. Cooking and grilling out were not just interests; they were passions, an opportunity for him to showcase his skills while gathering loved ones around the table. These moments were a reflection of his generous spirit and love for bringing people together.
Joe’s family structure is rooted in deep connections. He is survived by his beloved mother, Barbara Yandle Childress, who provided love and support throughout his life. He leaves behind siblings Michael Mills (Susan), Jason Floyd Childress, and Kathy Hinson (Greg).
Though he faced the heartache of loss throughout his journey, including his father, Wayne Mills, his son, Joseph Mills, and his brother, Timothy Mills.
