Joseph Frederick Mona

1940 - 2023

Joseph Frederick Mona, 83, of White Plains, Maryland passed away on December 29th, 2023. He was born in Washington, DC on April 02,1940 to Joseph and Loretta (Hoffmann) Mona.

Joe was one of sixteen family members that attended St. John's College High School in Washington, DC. His football career earned him the All-Metropolitan award and he was one of the first locals to receive the All-American award. Having received 67 athletic scholarships, he chose to attend the University of Maryland and continued his football career. He would later go on to play semi pro football until a debilitating knee injury prevented him from playing professionally. He was inducted into the St. John's College High School Hall of Fame in 2002 for his football and leadership accomplishments and presently, SJC will be recognizing him with the Joe Mona award which will now be given annually to the top football player.

While attending the University of Maryland, Joe started a side business cleaning carpets at his dad's company's numerous movie theaters throughout the Washington area. He later would open his own carpet business in Camp Springs, MD. Following this endeavor, he moved into residential construction and real estate development.

He enjoyed all water sports, dancing, and was an avid sports fan cheering for Maryland every chance he got. He was quite the jokester and adored his family and the many animals he and Jean shared in their 40 plus years together.

Along with his parents he is predeceased by his brother, Mike Mona and grandsons, Alex Ingagliato and Christopher Kingham.

He is survived by his loving wife Jean Mona, and daughters, Judi Limerick and husband, Joe Limerick, Lisa Shumaker and husband, Ray Shumaker, and Sherri Mona Anderson and husband, Mike Anderson, step-son, Matthew Kingham and Valerie Thornton, fiance, 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, brothers Cap Mona, Gary Mona, Nick Mona, and sisters, Delores Green and Donna Myers and spouses, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Services will be held on January 17th at St. Mary's Bryantown Catholic Church with visitation at 9, and mass to begin at 10. Following Mass, the burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery at 12.
