Joseph Patrick Mungavin passed away peacefully at his home in
Katy, Texas on January 25, 2026, just 5 days shy of his 92nd birthday.
Known to everyone as Joe, he was born in
New York City, New York to Thelma and Joseph Mungavin. He was the second of five siblings in their busy household. Around 1940 the family moved to Baltimore, Maryland and that its where he lived until enlisting in the Air Force at the age of 18. Upon enlisting, he was stationed in Bryan, Texas and quickly loved being a Texan. He enjoyed road trips with his fellow servicemen, with one particular trip in May of 1955 to Galveston marking a moment that would change his life. It was there that he met Carol on the beach and they fell in love and married in December of 1955.
After their wedding they lived briefly in Baltimore, but soon returned to Texas where he attended the University of Houston and they built a wonderful life and raised 4 children - Lori, Susan, Joe and Vicki. Joe was an amazingly engaged dad, never missing a sporting or school event and always out front as his kid's biggest cheerleader. A consummate family man, his favorite place to be was wherever his family was, and his love for them all was pure and passionate. His favorite hobby was tending to his yard. Even the Houston heat couldn't stop him from taking care of his plants and his beautiful rose bushes. The yard was his happy place where he could always retreat and relax. Another favorite pastime was his bridge nights every Saturday with his bride, Carol, and their dear friends. It became a great tradition and lasted for many years. He and Carol also bowled together, competing in a church league with several of their children and their spouses making it a beloved family affair.
Joe didn't like the spotlight. He was always the one in the background supporting others and making things better for them. St Peter's United Methodist Church was close to his heart and where he loved to worship. He and Carol made many wonderful friends over the years in their church home.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters Diane Krol and Thelma Carder. He is survived by his brothers Billy Campbell and Johnny Campbell. He is also survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Carol; his children Lori Gouldin and her husband Bill; Susan Matherne and her husband Terry; Joe Mungavin and his wife Dawn; and Vicki Hopkins and her husband Ken. He is also lovingly remembered by his nine adoring grandchildren, Caroline Gouldin, William Gouldin, Patrick Matherne, Harrison Matherne, Amber Humphrey, Natalie Mungavin, Jordan Mungavin, Ben Hopkins, Charlie Hopkins, and six precious great grandchildren.
We would like to thank AccentCare Hospice for their wonderful care of Joe and their support to Carol and the entire family. We also want to thank the St Peter's choir for all of their support.
We will celebrate Joe's life on Saturday, February 7th at 10:00 am at the Kingsland campus of St Peter's United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Music Department of the Kingsland campus of St Peter's United Methodist church or the
charity of your choice.
