Joseph Murray Obituary
Born Monday, March 12, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York, Joseph was the son of the late Joseph and Anne Murray.
Joseph was raised in Brooklyn, and was a graduate of Erasmus High School. After High School Joseph attended Long Island University. Before earning his degree Joseph enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country honorably during the Vietnam War. Joseph served on the USS Ranger 'Top Gun Bar None'. After earning an honorable discharge Joseph went back to Long Island University and earned his bachelor's degree.
Joseph would meet and marry the love of his life Claire Sutherland. They lived in Brooklyn for a short time, where Joseph was active in the Knights of Columbus and the VFW. Joseph had a long career as a Court Officer at the New York State Supreme Court. Eventually Joseph and Claire settled in Old Bridge, New Jersey, and started a family there. They raised their daughter Jodie in Old Bridge. Joseph was an active member of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh. Joseph was also a member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks.
Joseph loved going fishing and grilling in the backyard. He was a carpenter who could often be found out in the garage building different things with his grandson. When Claire was ill Joseph was a caregiver who always made sure, she was taken care of. He loved to dance and never turned down a dance with his daughter Jodie. Joseph was a caring family man and friend who will be deeply missed by all those that were blessed to know him.
Joseph was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Claire.
Joseph is survived by his loving daughter Jodie and her husband James, by his cherished grandchildren James and Marissa, and by his caring sister Patricia Greene.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at Michael Hegarty & John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals and Cremation Service, 3377 US Highway 9, Old Bridge, New Jersey.
A Funeral service will be at 10:15 AM on Friday at St. Ambrose Church located at 81 Throckmorton Lane Old Bridge, New Jersey 08857. Interment will be in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, North Hanover, New Jersey. The repast will follow at the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh on Oak street in Old Bridge NJ.
