Joseph Pilecki Obituary

Uncasville - Joseph "Joe" Pilecki Sr., 90, of Uncasville, passed away peacefully with family at his side Friday, Oct. 14, 2022. He was born July 18, 1932, in New London, the last of nine children of John Sr. and Helena Pilecki.

Joe grew up on a local farm during the Great Depression. Too young to enter World War II, his love of airplanes started by watching fighter planes based in Groton. practicing their dog fighting skills over the farm. He was elated when his older brother Jake earned his wings and flew P-51 Mustang fighters during that war. Upon graduation from Chapman Tech,, Joe shortly thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was trained as a military police officer, served two years in Germany, and reached the rank of staff sergeant. With his honorable discharge in hand, he returned to New London, and gained employment with Southern New England Telephone Company. His early years with SNET were spent climbing poles, but soon earned his electrician's license. The bulk of his 35-year career was installing and maintaining telephone equipment in all the major factories and public service service facilities in Eastern Connecticut. In fact, he installed the first 911 equipment in the state. His hard work ethic and uncompromising principles led to many perfect attendance years (no sick days) with the company. Upon retirement in 1989, Joe continued to spend his summers taking in air shows, polka dances and camping in Maine.

In 1957, he met his future wife Cathy in Yantic. They dated for several years with many trips with her on the backseat of his Harley motorcycle. They tied the knot in 1960, and settled in Uncasville, in 1962. Joe and Cathy have resided in the same home ever since.

Joe is predeceased by his parents; and siblings. He leaves behind his wife Cathy of 62 years and three children: Susan Martin with her husband Kim; Joseph Pilecki Jr. with his wife Mary; and Cathy Favalora with her husband Mark. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Calling hours and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local VFW.
