Joseph J. Romano, affectionately known as "Big Joe," passed away in his home with family at his side on October 24, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on July 30, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, Joseph lived a life that embodied the spirit of his beloved city. Most recently, he resided in Nekoosa, Wisconsin, where his warm spirit, vibrant, larger than-life-personality inspired all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11:00AM in Nekoosa, WI. A visitation will take place at church from 9:00AM until the time of service. Rev. John Swing will preside.
Joseph had a classic Italian charm, and was too similar to a small-town celebrity, known for his story telling prowess and ability to captivate listeners for hours, bringing laughter and joy to all. He had a deep love for his family, which was the cornerstone of his life. He cherished spending time with loved ones, often enjoying a drink with friends, sharing a laugh, and reminiscing on the good days. An avid gambler and fishing enthusiast, he found joy in both the thrill of the game and the tranquility of nature. Additionally, Joseph and his wife, Rose, were the founders of Romanos pizza and pub.
With an appreciation for good music, Joseph was a fan of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Louis Prima, and Jerry Vale. His passion for life extended to taking pride in always having a nice vehicle, reflecting his love for the finer things. As a business owner, he took pride in his work and legacy. He was known for his kindness, always ready to lend a hand to those in need, and support without judgment, but also demanded mutual respect. Joseph was always noted to be dressed sharply, he even opted to wear dress pants while mowing the lawn! He felt that it showed respect to everyone around him. Josephs favorite television shows included Fox News and NCIS and would be heard anytime you entered his home. He often expressed his thoughts with his signature sayings, "Fuhgedd'aboudit" or "Mingya madonne." He was an unwavering fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs, showcasing his loyalty to his hometown teams.
During the last five years, he spent a lot of time in the Cancer Center at Riverview Hospital. He spoke very highly of all the staff he came to know. They all became like family to him. He loved them, and they loved him. The people of the cancer center made his fight a little easier to endure. Joseph never was a quitter, and he was determined to never give up, he fought this battle to the very end. He surpassed every expectation through his journey, which gave him the strength to keep fighting further.
He is survived by his children, Joseph Romano (Gloria Hunter), Jacqueline Romano-Nichols (Aaron Webb), and Melissa Carson (Eric Carson); grandchildren, Mia Nichols-Waege (TJ Waege), Michael Nichols, Reese Romano, Jacob Webb, Isiah Carson, Christi Ceplina, and Nathan Ceplina; great grandchildren, Aliviana Wenzlick, Jax Waege, Hunter Waege, Greyson Waege, Milena Iniguez-Aquila, Alonzo Iniguez-Aquila, Emmett Ceplina, Dawson Ceplina, and Isabella Kay Ceplina; siblings, Nancy Romano (Gloria Romano) of Huntley, Il, Harold "Snap" Morris (Mary Morris) of Oak Forest, IL, Pamela Morris (Eric) of Mount Pleasant, WI, Coleen Majchrowicz (Alan Majchrowicz), of Bellingham, WA, Martha Rhodes (Rick Rhodes) of Machesney, IL, Patrick McFray (Pattie McFray) of Millington, MI, and Tony Urlocker (Michelle Urlocker) of Millington, MI; stepbrother, Robert Morris of IL; and best friend that from the time they were babies, until the day he passed, he spoke to every day, Frankie "The Beak" Pecoraro.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Rose A. Romano; sister, Allison Fischer, and brother, Peter McFray (Chris McFray).
He was a devoted family man to his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, siblings, and nieces and nephews. All of whom he loved fiercely, eager to be a part of their lives, and share in their joys.
