In 2019 Joe moved to Leisure Living in Hartford, then to Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls in 2023.
He was a member of Wellington Catholic Church until it's closure and then became a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church of Humboldt. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Hartford American Legion for 75 years and many other local boards. In 2010, he was able to join the Honor Flight to Washington DC to see the Veteran memorials.
He is survived by his eight children, Jeff (Linda), Sioux Falls and their children, Ann and Andrew; Jeanita (Dale) Erickson, Sioux Falls and their children, Pam and Michael; Patricia (William) Pearson, Hartford and their children, Matthew, Adam, Christopher and Ryan; Susan (Virgil) Tjeerdsma, Tyndall and their children, Cody and Marcus; Paul of Humboldt; Scott (Gayle), Sioux Falls and their children, Samantha and Meghan; Sheila (Kelly) Vis, Sioux Falls and their children, Caleb and Isaiah; and Janet (Craig) Swier, Sioux Falls and their children, Lincoln and Taya, 22 great-grandchildren, a sister, Avis Herdina of Rapid City, SD, and two sisters-in-law, Marian Plagge and LaVonne Rose both of Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donnabelle in 2005, his parents, a great-grandchild, Stephen Erickson, siblings, Mildred, James, Greta, Leo and Edward, brothers-in-law, Herman Plagge and Donald Burgraff and sister-in-law, Mary Burggraff.
