Mr. Joseph James "Buddy" Slappy of Columbus, Ohio was born October 16, 1944 in Waukegan, Illinois. He was the third of 11 children and the eldest son of the late, Reverend Joseph A. and Ida Adams Slappy.
Joseph was reared in a loving Christian home filled with the joy and laughter of his 11 siblings.
On August 25th, 2024, at the age of 79, Joseph James Slappy went home to be with the Lord.
Joseph was a graduate of East High School and was employed by the Buckeye Steel Casting Company here in Columbus, Ohio where he poured steel for over 20 years. He retired after 40 years of service and was given special recognition during a luncheon held in his honor. At this luncheon he was bestowed the "Golden Work Boot" and a plaque honoring his service to the company. He also served in the United States Marine Corps and faithfully fulfilled his call to duty.
He was a member of the Bernard Upshaw Gospel Singers and sang on the Volume IV album "Somebody's Knocking at Your Door" released in 1974. He volunteered to pick up and deliver donated food items to the St. Matthew FBH Church food pantry that provided meals for families in need.
Joseph married and was blessed with four sons, Joseph (Joe Joe), Anthony, James and Jeffrey Slappy. These family ties are shared with his loving daughters, Ms. Debra Taylor and Ms. Rhonda Jackson.
Later in life he met and married his loving wife of 20 years, Mrs. Lisa Lee Slappy. During this time, they shared the love of a blended family. On many occasions, their home was a place to father and strengthen family ties.
Joseph loved to cook out, watch sports and was proud to share his recipe for his famous chocolate cake.
He was a family man, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He took great pride in his grandchildren.
When the Lord impressed upon Joseph to draw near to Him, his place of worship was the Gospel Lighthouse Church, where his long-time friend, Dr. Jerry Fryar, serves as the Senior Pastor.
Although sickness entered his life, his sense of humor never diminished and would be a bridge of comfort to those who would visit him. While in the hospital, it was during this time that God granted Joseph the opportunity to accept His Son, Jesus Christ as his Personal Savior. Without hesitation, Joseph asked the Lord to come into his life. God, always faithful, fulfilled his promise to Joseph.
He is predeceased and by his parents; brother, John Slappy; sisters, Margret Fisher, Loretta Slappy and Wortise Slappy Carroll.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories, loving wife of 20 years, Lisa Lee Slappy; sons, Joseph (Rachel) Slappy III, Anthony (Sharon) Slappy, James Slappy, Jeffrey (Marquetta) Slappy; daughters, Rhonda Jackson, Debra Taylor; brother, Steven Slappy of Memphis, TN.; sisters, Alice (Cecil) Williams, Janice Slappy, Marion Greenwood, Ellen (Stephen) Dinkins of Atlanta, GA.; sister-in-law, Drema Slappy; grandchildren, Lewis Simpson III, Jaleesa Taylor, Donavon, Jamel, Laiyah and Adam Slappy, Keith Winston, Javen, Janiah, Loretta, Jazmin, Kyasia, Dakota and Naveh Slappy, and special Friends/Nephews Gordon, Jordan, Gregory Winbush and many loving Family and Friends.
