Joseph Smith Obituary

Joseph Michael Smith, age 57, died at home on September 23, 2025. Born on October 28, 1967, to William T. and Mary Jane (Vigne) Smith, Joe was the youngest of four children raised in Hazlet, NJ. He graduated from Raritan High School in the class of 1986.
With a lifelong love of cars and an innate talent for understanding engines, Joe began his career as an automotive service technician at Remsen Dodge in Hazlet. Eventually becoming a master technician, he took great pride in his work and was always happy to share his knowledge. After 23 years at Remsen, Joe partnered with his best friend to open their own shop, BX3 Automotive in Port Monmouth, NJ, in 2015. They built the business on integrity, honesty, and genuine care - a reflection of their shared values. Like many small businesses, they faced challenges during the pandemic and ultimately made the difficult decision to close in 2023. In his final years Joe worked for TAG Systems USA in Eatontown, NJ.
Outside of work Joe enjoyed photography, history, genealogy, and, of course, all things automotive. He loved owning and working on classic cars, participating in car shows, and especially joining power tours where he could travel with friends and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Joe's passion for cars was exceeded only by his steadfast love for his family and friends. He is already deeply missed.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, William T. and Mary Jane Smith, his brother Thomas J. Smith, and sister-in-law Donna Downey Smith. He is survived by his brother David E. Smith of Mandeville, LA; sister Carol Bouchard and brother-in-law John Bouchard of Apex, NC; niece Rachel Smith of Mandeville; nephew Matthew Bouchard and niece Kyra Bouchard, both of Apex, NC; niece Kimberly and husband Gregorie Lardiere II of Toms River, NJ; and great-nephews Patrick Trushell III and Greggie Lardiere III of Toms River. He is also survived by his best friend, Liz Antenucci, who held a special place in his heart.
A memorial gathering will be held Friday, November 7, 2025 from 6-9 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home 115 Tindall Rd., Middletown. Interment will be privately held by the family.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Joe's memory to the Monmouth County SPCA or your favorite charity for veterans.
