Affectionately known as Henry to his family and friends, Henry Wirth returned to his Lord and Savior on August 3, 2025, at 92. Born on March 21, 1933, to Joseph H. Wirth, Sr., and Marie Guillory Wirth, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Jean Macaluso Wirth.

Henry attended St. Theresa of Avila grammar school and Jesuit High School, graduating with honors and earning a full scholarship to Loyola University, where he graduated with a sociology degree in 1954. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, later achieving Captain in the active reserves. His 41-year career at the Louisiana Department of Labor culminated in his role as Metropolitan Area Director for Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, and St. Tammany parishes. He was instrumental in establishing four new field offices across the greater New Orleans area, and facilitating job placement for over 2,000 individuals at the 1984 World’s Fair. A member of the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, he was appointed to the Private Industry Council by four mayors and received the Charles Dunbar Award in 1984 for outstanding service to the citizens of Louisiana.

Henry married the love of his life, Jean, in 1960, and they raised three children: Jeanne Gallagher (Shawn), Joseph H. Wirth, III (Suzanne), and Juliette Glaviano (David). He was a devoted grandfather to Nicholas (Carson), Ryan (Amy), Collin (Camryn), Patrick, Kevin (Nataly), Alexandra, Kathryn, and Joseph.

A man for others, as guided by the Jesuit motto Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, Henry lived his faith in Christ the King Parish in Terrytown for over 50 years, serving as a Eucharistic minister, lector, principal of the elementary school of religion for 16 years, teacher in the high school of religion for public school children, marriage preparation leader, host for Confirmation candidates, leader of a Renew group, prayer group facilitator, and RCIA instructor. His dedication earned him the Order of St. Louis Medal from the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Henry coached little league baseball for eight years, proudly leading his teams to three playground championships. Henry and Jean loved to travel including memorable trips across Europe. Henry was also an avid tennis player, where he earned several trophies.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Suites at Algiers Point Assisted Living for their dedicated support and care over the years and during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jesuit High School. Services will be held on Tuesday, August 12, at Holy Name of Mary Church, 400 Verret St, New Orleans, LA 70114, with public visitation from 9–11 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. Private burial will follow at Lakelawn Metairie Cemetery.
