Joseph Wynne Obituary
Joseph Gregory Wynne, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, in Southport, North Carolina. He was 85 years old.
Greg, as he was known, was born on March 12, 1940, at Peck Memorial Hospital in Brooklyn, New York to his loving parents, Margaret Farrell Wynne and Joseph Patrick Wynne. In 1944, their family was completed with the birth of his brother, John Patrick Wynne. Growing up, Greg remembered walking to school, going to Ebbets Field to see his beloved Dodgers, and playing home free, stickball, punchball, and stoop ball those were the days!
He attended St. John's Prep, in Queens, New York with his childhood friend James Heil, who he met in the third grade and who later married Merle's sister, Arlene Herbert. What good times these life-long friends and sisters had! Later he went on to attend St. John's University in Queens, New York, where he received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration, majoring in Marketing and Management.
Greg's successful career in journalism, public relations and local politics started at the Long Island Press and included executive assistant positions to several Nassau County Executives in local Long Island politics. Some of the things he mentioned he was proud of in his career were: successful election campaigns, organizing local parades, and his "Our Cedarhurst" book. Again, life-long friends and relationships were made during his career.
After 26 years of a career reflecting a lifetime of commitment and diligence in his professional pursuits, Greg retired in 1995. What did he and Merle do in retirement? Anything they wanted and, of course, travel. lots of travel! Together they went on more than 40 cruises, totaling 412 days at sea and many non-cruise vacations with friends and family. Yes, retirement was good!
Greg leaves behind the love of his life, Merle Ann Herbert Wynne, his wife of 62 years, and their four children, Joanne Weaver, Joseph Patrick Wynne, Scott Gregory Wynne, and Keith William Wynne. His love of family extends to his eight grandchildren, Corey Bald, Lilly Bald, Alex Bald, Patrick Wynne, Christopher Wynne, Jessica Wynne, Michael Wynne, and William Wynne. He is also survived by his brother, John Patrick Wynne, his sister-in-law's, Judy Wynne and Arlene Heil, and his brother-in-law, James Heil. The legacy of his love and family values continue through his surviving family, who brought immense joy to his life.
